2024-25 Opponent Tracking

Years ago when I lived in Laramie, 7,220 ft above sea level, the Pokes were a two half team. First half they played a ball control game ( no shot clock back then), second half half they ran! Work almost always. You could see the legs go and the shot fall sort for just about any visiting team. It does make a difference. Imagine playing football wearing thirty pounds of pads and protective gear!

I caught the end of the halftime show in one of the games last night just flipping channels. They were talking about the lack of Cinderellas this year and how only teams from the 4 major conferences remain. One of them said it validates the strength of the SEC and another one tried to spin that teams like BYU and North Carolina are the new Cinderellas. 🙄 Last word was from Barkley who said something like "guys we need to be careful here, those cinderelllas are important to the future of this tournament" (not close to an exact quote). Kudos to Chuck for not swallowing the corporate line!

This guy was going off about the altitude last night.

Interesting, I always kind of assumed that teams who played at altitude wouldnt have any issue at sea level, didnt think that altitude advantage cut both ways

*I guess lack of an advantage can be a disadvantage in this situation though

Their HC said just about as much during a pregame interview about having been matched up with VCU. They were well aware of the advantage.

I felt like a Greek God in New Orleans at -3 sea level after living in Santa Fe at +7,700 but maybe I'm built different. Now Albuquerque at +4,200 feels normal but when I go up to +7,000 at the Continental Divide I feel winded quicker.

Anecdote aside there is an unavoidable physiological effect of altitude unless you are spending a week or more acclimating your players using pressure chambers or oxygen or something and that feels like a bit much. It definitely has an impact.

New Mexico has their new coach:

This one was on my wish list too. The return game of the home and home will be really interesting with two new head coaches known for uptempo, offense-oriented play.
