2024-25 Roster Thread

Here we go again. Same format as last year. Hopefully with a little less action the first week. Not making any assumptions about who may be returning until they have either indicated that they are coming back or the portal closes on May 1st. I will edit this post daily if things are changing to keep the most recent info at the top. With that being said let's have a great off season and put together a roster that can win the A10!

Ah gotcha. I went to Vivid seats and found some for around $60 and UR is selling some high up seats for $45. I am still trying to work better deals especially if I have to sit by myself.

Dunk it big guy, dunk it
Dunking is a mindset, not just an ability. With many players it comes and goes game to game and we have seen that with many players over the years. Fermin got into the dunk mode during the game and those late two dunks were both contested and with some contact ( uncalled). He did that postseason last year that gave hope for a rimrattling year but he often chooses the 3 - 6 foot shot verses attacking the rim. Both are important skills, the latter aggressiveness helps amp his rebounding and amp up the team and crowd in addition to having a higher percentage of successs. ( note: Justin Tillman had the most consistent Dunk mentality of late).

( any of you who in your younger days- some may still be in your younger days- played Slam Ball at an area elementary school playground on 8 foot* baskets will know that if you go into it layiing it up then it takes a bit to get into the dunk mentality). * need those lowered to 7 feet now*. : ).

You said "Pretty sure if you have the ball inside the circle there is no way you can have an offensive foul called on you." which is wrong. I've seen it with player control fouls - not just flagrant fouls.

It would not be legal to lower the shoulder inside the arc and knock Fermin's primary defender to the ground - if the defender had legal guarding position. There's a reason the rulebook goes into specifying "secondary defender" when discussing the restricted area. Otherwise, the rulebook would merely state "a defender."
Resident RN Referee here. Correct, Restricted Arc (RA) plays apply to secondary defenders. They cannot establish Legal Guarding Position (LGP) in the RA for block/charge plays. They CAN establish LGP in the RA and attempt to block a shot so long as they stay vertical/legal.

Furthermore, Rule 17 Art 7 (the one you and @RamDanFan have been referencing) only applies when the offensive player has continuous motion to the basket. So, if the offensive player drives to the basket, comes to a jump stop, then lowers the shoulder to create illegal contact it's still a Player Control Foul (PCF) even if it's on a secondary defender who's in the RA (Rule 10 Art 14.b)

A lot of respect because being a ref is something I would NEVER try to do. Tough job. Here's my beef though. The rules you describe there are almost NEVER called that way. The offensive player is almost always allowed to move the other player out of the way to make room for themselves. Why. I'd really like to see it called more.

Thanks, that's been my understanding after a play piqued my interest years ago (a charge call inside the RA).

After coaching low-level basketball, with new training referees (8th through 12th graders) and voting on specialized rules for our league, I have a new respect for the job referees do. I still get upset about some calls though.

Ahhh… YES… Slam ball on 8 ft rims. Everything was a power dunk and the arms were bruised pretty bad the next day. Of course no offensive goaltending otherwise there would never be an outside shot. Loved Slam ball!

I’m with you and I get it. Essentially, there a very things you have to do to get a player control foul in the restricted circle that aren’t considered flagrant. And this is why you just hardly ever see it called. I certainly can’t remember seeing it called at all. I’d say lowering your shoulder without also lowering your whole body, pushing off by extending your arm into the primary defender and kneeing the primary defender would be about the only ways you would see the whistle blow on the offensive player inside the circle. That leaves quite a few other ways to clear the necessary space to go up strong without the defender having a chance to stop you from scoring. This is the essential point I was trying to make about the advantage available with the ball inside the circle.

Disclaimer. The of course this is coming from a Dad that tells his 14 year old AAU son to find the biggest player on the other team, drive into the lane, run into him as hard as you can and then shoot the ball. 9 times out 10 the ref calls the foul on the big dude.

Making room for themselves doesn't necessarily mean there's illegal contact, but there's always gray area. The point of the game is to score the ball and rule changes over time have been made in the offense's favor. That's what people pay to see lol and right, wrong or indifferent, the rules provide more ways for a defender to foul than it does for an offensive player
