Recruiting 2024 Offers

He appears to possess solid athletic finesse. It's uncertain if he will see much playing time in his first year until he adds some weight and increases his speed for college-level games. However, I believe he has the potential to grow here. Additionally, he would have Clark and Fermin as mentors... Okafor as well, and possibly another big player. This would definitely provide us with more options.

Does anyone have information on Okafor's role within the team? Is he mainly a practice player or does he showcase skills at the A10 level?

Do you think that with the way the transfer portal and NIL in its current state opens the door for us to recruit better HS players that we otherwise couldn’t get in years past?

Yes. Just watched that discussion on the Sports Grid I believe it was. Now that means that a number of high school players won’t graduate from VCU but some high school freshmen and sophomore’s mixed with some transfer portal juniors and seniors is where we are currently

Who would thought HS recruits would be in a position where they can easily get overlooked as a result of the portal.

seems like odom is “settling” for high school commits. w the portal im sure he’s able to get a higher caliber of player out of highscool than he would otherwise, but hard to feel like they won’t leave as soon as we develop them in a real asset

Certainly comes across as “a tell” about our NIL funds.

The ones we want = we can’t afford
Those we can afford - aren’t the ones we want.

I have a hard time believing recruiting high school players is a winning strategy

If they are good enough to impact winning they aint coming here and if they develop to be good enough to impact winning they ain’t staying here.

Also, we haven't had any overseas signings. You would think we would have one by now, right?

Odom is also thinking about the future too. At the MM level and with limited NIL compared to the P4/5/6 we have to consider freshman who were missed/under the radar or had a very good winter/spring year and moved up in rankings. If they stay 2 years and we get one year out of them, at least we didn't have to try and go find them in the portal. And they also might decide to stay if that position is wide open because a grad transfer just graduated.
At the MM level it is going to be very difficult to rebuild year after year with all portal guys. you need some continuity to maintain the culture of how we play.
