2025-26 Opponent Tracking

I started respecting him more after that first season at McNeese and seeing the mutual love and respect down there. He left them in a great place.
Not to mention, I expected him to bounce after his first season but he stayed for a second year and got them a tournament win.

He left for the 1st P4 job he was offered, and in his first presser after getting the NCSU job advised his former McNeese players to leave for the biggest bag they could get.

It cracks me up how much love Will is getting from people who've crucified him for 8 years. As most of you know, I'm still friendly with Will, and we text a couple of times each year. I think he'd get a laugh out of the love he is being shown on here today, just as I am.
You gotta admit a lot has happened since he left. He got in trouble at LSU and the fans here did crucify him (rightfully so). But since his hiatus he took over an irrelevant program like McNeese and took them to the dance for the first time in 23 years and did it again the next season and delivered their program's first tournament win. He accomplished more in two years than all of their previous coaches combined accomplished in over 50 years. Then he gets the NC State gig and agrees to play us H&H.

I honestly don't get this mindset that once you hate on somebody you have to be permanently locked in on that mindset forever. Dude may have been a jerk 8 years ago, and perhaps he's still a jerk, but we all know getting a H&H with an ACC school doesn't happen much here. So why not show him some love (or at minimum some respect)?

You really think he couldn't have gotten a P4 job if he had put himself out there?

Yes, I think he was in the penalty box. I also heard that he had promised the AD at McNeese 2 years.

Not that I think for a minute that a promise would have kept him there had be been able to get a P4 job

And I was going to mention that. I too heard that he promised the AD who gave him a second chance a minimum of two years. But again, these schools are not in the business of making decisions based on morality, they're trying to win. I don't believe for a second anybody was waiting two years before releasing him from the "penalty box" for a big time gig. I don't remember which P4 schools had opening last year but after that first season at McNeese, I doubt very seriously he wouldn't have gotten strong consideration for a big time job if he were willing to leave.

And regarding telling the McNeese players to get the bag, I would bet anything you care more about that than the McNeese fans.

Promises don't mean much in college basketball but it makes sense to have a two year audition and be completely free of NCAA penalties and then go out and get the best job possible. I am sure that was the plan from the start.

Exactly.

How many people on here hated Capel or Grant at first when they left us for OU & Bama? But have since started liking the guys again.

A LOT of people on here hated Shaka initially after he left..... maybe it was because they foolishly thought he would stay here forever? Maybe, it was because of the CBB Men of March interview that they did of him talking about being a "father figure" or whatever it was back in Jan-Feb of 2015.... right before he left? Maybe it was a combination of all of that and/or other stuff.

Yet, by the time Texas came to the STU, everyone loved him again.

Sure WW left a bad taste in a lot of peoples mouths when he left here.... was it how he left? Was it the stories we heard from the players here from when he was the coach? Was it all the legal stuff with all the "Big @$$ Offers"? Maybe a combination of all of it.

But Maybe now he's changed? Or Maybe he's just got a really good poker face.... and he's still the slimeball that a lot of people thought he was when he left. Who knows?

And like Chill said.... he's giving us a H&H with a P5 school... I don't see many other P5's going out of their way to schedule us even as a 1 off at their place.... let alone a Home & Home. Maybe hes doing it out of respect, because of how good our program is? And how loud our arena can get in big games?
