2025-26 Roster Thread

Oh my, the possibility of 15 full scholarship players, all with pro ambitions ... Rams would figure to lead A10 in victories, long faces near the trainer and Gatorade .... and quick transfers. Much prefer idea of 11 scholarships where the player is never more than about three bodies out of the rotation.

Bring back freshman teams. Rams had one once.

I hope we’re set. No minutes available and might expedite departures next year for lack of PT. And we can save any $$ left in the kitty for next year.

Use the scholly for a sure starter (unlikely) or a three point sniper backup; otherwise, more depth probably won’t help chemistry.

So, you are also saying assistant coaches have no say so regarding team decisions? He is also the head coach’s brother.
I'm saying I doubt a player who an assistant coach worked with three years ago is going to get minutes based on that previous relationship.

My prediction for Fermin minutes is like this:
  • There will be games he gets zero minutes. The game is too tight and we don't have foul trouble.
  • There will be games we he gets a few minutes. This will be more the norm, lets say 5 minutes, as part of a planned rotation.
  • There will be games he gets 10+ minutes. Early foul trouble for multiple players on the front line.
Unless his game really develops, this is how I see it. End of season average minutes per game prediction: 7.

It's all on Fermin if he wants minutes this year. He improved from Frosh to Soph, but was stagnant in his Jr year looking lost on offense and defense, looking for the hero block or dunk. If he dedicates himself in the BDC Lab he will get his minutes along with our "New to VCU" guys. If we are running and pressing, we will need him. I just hope he limits his guitar time and works on some basic post moves. Lets Go VCU!!!!

Ferm has bad hands and needs to dunk it more but he definitely wasn’t lost on defense. His flaws are really easy to see and what he does well isn’t as noticeable so he can be frustrating to watch but he’s not a scrub. He is good at setting screens, is one of the best shot blockers in the conference, and can pass well for a big. He hasn’t just been getting playing time because he’s nice or loyal, he genuinely makes the team better. He is going to get playing time because he is a good player.

Heck no on the freshman team, if that means the guys only get three years eligibility as in the old days.

Well said. Echos what I have been saying all along.

Ferm is also good in the locker room, guys like him, support him as he does them. You cannot dislike a guy like Ferm. Whether you are on a team, in the military, some type of fraternal organization where we all have aspirations but we must coexists for our mutual benefit. You need guys like Ferm.

He and the joy he brings is essential. Now as to his guitar, my favorite instrument. I say play to your heart’s content but get in the work. For what it’s worth, he told me in Denver that all he wanted to do was hoop.

I think he just needs individual motivation. Maybe #2 Martelli, or Burgess can work with him. I think Burgess would be a good fit as they both have that laid back personality.

That would have to be modified so there was no eligibility lost .... Virginia Union and Virginia State have freshman teams ...
My idea of a freshman team would be one or two true scholarship frosh joined by some walk-on hopefuls and perhaps a few IM stars from the regular student body .... I'm thinking 10-12 games, all within easy bussing distance .... kind of take place of red-shirt season.
NCAA Division 1 (University) schools had freshman teams until about '75 .... VCU didn't have to abide by those guidelines because it was not NCAA Division 1 ... the instant varsity eligibility may have helped in the recruiting process - "come here and you can play right away.'
