Ren was a monster of a player, but off court one of the nicest guys you'd ever meet. He SHOULD have his jersey in the rafters, but since he didn't graduate, they won't consider it. (Which is really terrible since he eventually returned to VCU and worked as a police officer until he retired)I guess this is as good a jumping off point as any, and I've been meaning to ask for a while now - what was it like watching Ren Watson play? Obviously I just saw Luke's season, and I was around for Larry, Mo, and Curly... er, Hason and Juvonte, and they were all great shot blockers, but Ren must've been something else. I mean Larry is #2 all-time for us with an average of 2.7 blocks per game, and Ren is at FOUR POINT NINE??? ON AVERAGE??? That's unfathomable. I can only imagine it was the equivalent of watching Briante but for blocks instead of steals.

Bamboye who left VCU had the potential to be as good if not better than RenThe two most unapproachable records in Rams lore are ... Briante Weber's 374 career steals ... and Watson's 391 blocked shots in just three seasons. That stat wasn't kept Ren's freshman year.
Ren led Buckingham to the State Class A title as a senior and was signed by then coach Chuck Noe.

How so? Bamgboye had 75 blocks in 35 games this last year. Ren's blocks were not tracked his freshman year. Below are his blocks his sophomore - senior years with games played. NOTE: Schools only played 26 regular season games when Ren played. They now play 31 regular season games.
Ren Watson
1976-77 - 135 blocks in 26 games
1977-78 - 127 blocks in 29 games
1978-79 - 129 blocks in 25 games
Ren averaged 130.3 blocks per year at VCU during the years that blocks were tracked. No way Bamgboye comes close to those numbers over his career.
yeah no one here is a bigger fan of Luke than I am (or so I thought) but he isn't close to Ren. Could he get there in time? I suppose it's possible but highly, highly unlikelyHow so? Having watched all of his home games he had a block that was different than most. He rarely swatted it, he had soft touch so that more often than not it fell straight down and he recovered it.Ren was a monster of a player, but off court one of the nicest guys you'd ever meet. The only caveat to this is the vast majority of the recruits listed were initially offered by RO and staffJust took a look at VCU's 2026 recruiting profile on 247sports and it's impressive. This staff is recruiting at a high level and appears to be more open with respect to the recruiting function. Updated list shows a lot of 4-Stars and even a 5-Star. Big times ahead.
Or others like say.....Nyk Lewis this year. I guess he kind of fell in our lap, however, Tillery stayed true to his commitment, and he was an RO recruit. The only caveat to this is the vast majority of the recruits listed were initially offered by RO and staff. The current staff certainly may still be recruiting them.
And while we have a new coach and they have different systems, the type of players that fit those systems are similar enough that re-recruiting Odom recruits make some sense if the guys are still interested. Martelli may look out there and simply identify some of the same players Odom did as being good fits for his system and VCU.Or others like say.....Nyk Lewis this year.
