Last Friday night at the Xfinity Center was a big night in DMV basketball,
Maryland coach Buzz Williams' debut at home and the renewal of a local rivalry. It was also an opportunity for plenty of local prospects to attend and get a feel for the unique environment, and while the end result didn't favor the Terps, that didn't prevent them from making progress with over a dozen targets ranging from the 2026-2028 classes. Included in that group was a highly regarded point guard.
"It was a crazy atmosphere," 2027 four-star point guard
J'Lon Lyons told IMS. "It's an arena that you kind of can't say no to in a sense. That was a crazy arena. Even when they were losing, they'd get a bucket and the fans would go crazy trying to spark them. It's really cool how the fans are like a community there and how they all have their own chants for certain parts of the game. It had me pumped up, ready to come back and play for my own season."
While Williams' system is often tabbed as a more 'grind it out' style, point guard Myles
Rice posted a strong 19-point outing. It was a chance for Lyons to see how Williams uses his floor general and envision how he would fit in a similar role.
"Myles was getting a lot of paint touches, especially towards the end of the game. In the first half, they were settling for a lot of threes and couldn't really figure it out, but you could tell in the second half that Coach Buzz and his staff got Myles right and really emphasized the game plan in getting downhill and he excelled at that. He was going crazy at the end. It was good to see the trust that Coach Buzz has in his guards especially at the end of the game," he said.
Assistant coach Wassiba Bede is spearheading the pursuit for the Clinton Grace (Md.) and New World standout.
"My talks with Coach Bede have been good, it's just us continuing to build on a relationship that we've established. He wants me bad. That's my guy, so it just comes down to me continuing to prove that I can play in those types of atmospheres that the game had to offer. No high school atmosphere will compare to that, so I just need to be ready and it's the Big Ten. That's a great conference. You can't run from it, so I have to be ready," he said.
Lyons, who ranks as the No. 54 overall prospect in the 247Sports 2027 rankings, is being sought after by the Hoyas as well, and he took an unofficial there in early September. Another program to watch with Lyons early on is VCU. He visited the Rams the second weekend of September for an unofficial and recently completed another visit by attending their win against Wagner.
"Another great atmosphere. It was packed out. As far as their play style, I think it matches my game well. It's up-tempo with a lot of freedom. There aren't a lot of play calls, it's more of playing off ball screens and reading things on the fly. Another thing was they like to shoot a lot of three's and get out in transition for lobs. They have a great coaching staff over there," Lyons said.
Lyons doesn't have any other unofficials set in stone, but during this time of the calendar, a lot of prospects make it out to games whenever their personal schedules allow.
