Players '25 Consensus 4* PF/C Silas Barksdale commits to VCU!

Let’s temper the expectations. If Silas was a world beater out of the gate, he’d not be coming here. I remember when Fermin was a recruit and we had HWard. All you heard was how Fermin ran H Ward off because Ward wouldn’t be able to compete with him.

Well that has been proven to be wrong. VCU would have been better had ward stayed. Ward’s family needed the money I get it and respect his decision.

Now as to Silas, he is likely to be playing alongside Bamgboye or possibly Fermin (if he doesnt bolt) next year. He wont replace either.

At the end of the day, we have a young guy, who can grow into what we hope to be a great VCU big. However, just dont expect him to come in and become a world beater at the DI level out of the gate.

I feel like it's possible Fermin leaves next year. Bamg will be one year older and will hopefully make the sophomore leap. He's already eating into Ferm's playing time, and there will be one more "mouth" to feed in Barksdale.

Given, his role and how much he gets the ball, you might be correct. However, I do think he likes it here and it appears taht the coaches like him as well.

I say, feed the kid the ball and watch him grow. We can blame Fermin, and we do. However, we also have to blame his teammates and the coaching staff as well. He has to get the touches in the post and until the last game, that hasn’t been the case.

I still hold out hope that he will give us something in the post. Let’s see how it goes.

I agree with tempering expectations (bigs and primary ball handlers take the longest to adjust to college), and yes, it's very easy to lose perspective when you have a highly touted recruit coming in that'll hopefully fill a hole in the roster.

That being said, the reason why I have been so high on Silas is because he's THE most polished incoming Freshman big we've had in a couple decades and that's not hyperbole. More than Larry Sanders, Justin Tillman, Juvonte Reddic, MSS, Mo... you name them. Now I'm NOT saying he will have a better career than them, but I AM saying I'll take him as a prospect over them. I've said it multiple times in the recruitment forum, my "eye test" is a matter of "is this player dominating because they're bigger/more athletic than the competition? Or do they have a skillset that'll translate to college?" Silas is the latter. His footwork, his anticipation and touch for rebounds/putbacks, his passing & court awareness, and ability to be a threat in the midrange before he steps on campus is something we haven't seen from any of RN's favorite bigs that played in the Siegel Center.

Again, yes he'd be going high major if he's a world beater from day one, but fans are excited about his arrival for good reason lol

I'm an eye test guy too. I see and agree everything you've just said. He's probably the most skilled big we've had in a long time.

He already is a step up on our current front line before he steps on campus.

Having said that, we still need an experienced big out of the transfer portal next spring while he gets acclimated to the college game.

I think Fermin really enjoys VCU (although I thought the same of Tobi). But Ferm is a Jr and will be a senior next year. I really doubt he is going to risk his final year in the transfer portal. His stats so far do not target major programs and I doubt he would want to go lateral and certainly not down. He is getting plenty of time on the court and I think he will still be getting plenty of time on the court come March.

If Fermin can put together more performances like the one he had against Loyola, he'll be fine.

Please lemme know the score (couldn't afford to see this game live tonight).. and extra brownie points or a STREAM which I'd really love! Looks like as of this post there's probably abut 45 mins remaining?

Woodside hoops dominant through 15 games, look for national win

It’s a fun time to be a Woodside boys varsity basketball fan.

“We’re very connected,” said four-star, VCU commit Silas Barksdale. “We’re very young, but we have a great connection outside of basketball,”

The Wolverines are off to a 15-0 start to the 2024-25 season and have now won 25 games in a row. Getting to 16-0 will be a challenging mark to hit, as Woodside will head to Richmond Saturday to play John Marshall, ranked by MaxPreps as the 11th-best high school basketball team in the U.S.
