Players '25 Consensus 4* PF/C Silas Barksdale commits to VCU!

The problem I see with all 90% of VCU's perimeter scoring will be gone.
I think Hill and Jennings will be able to score the ball well in their careers. Fats can score but apparently needs to work on a few other things. If Martin can shoot like we’ve been made to believe, he will help too. Plus there will likely be some lower major guard looking for the next level up or a high major guard looking for more mins/opportunity in the portal. For all we know Odom could be gone and everything will change. We know very little season to season these days

Maybe....
  • We have three players that are completely out of eligibility even in today's NCAA
    • Clark, Jackson and Shulga
  • Two players who may have one more year
    • Bam and Phil
    • Even with eligibility left
      • I expect Bam is done as he has a decent path to getting paid to play post college
      • Phil may be able to make more money by sticking around another year
  • In what I will call the "Modern Era" (Post McCarthy)
    • We have had only 5 double digit soph guards
      • EMay and Bones (Future NBA players)
      • BA, Melvin and Ace
        • If he works and is not home sick T.Hill could......put up Melvin like numbers in my opinion
          • That does not mean I would build a roster planning for him to be double digit scorer, just that it could happen
  • Finally, we have no idea who the staff will grab out of the portal and in the age of instant play, its hard to forecast these things
Neither Phil nor Bam have any eligibility left. They are both in their year. The last covid class on par with Ace Baldwin, Jahmir Watkins etc.

Maybe, maybe not
What factors would play in them getting an extra? To the best of my knowledge, I have not anything posted on this site or elsewhere that would suggest the possibility of a 6th year. If so, why would not Shulga or Jackson have the same possibility? All for of them are 5th years.

"NCAA D-1 Bylaw 12.8.1 limits eligibility to five years, though there are exceptions for unique circumstances such as military service, religious missions and national pandemics.".

The 5th year rule was challenged in court but the challenged failed.

not to be an alarmist but if Bam and Phil have another year granted why would they stay as opposed to getting paid twice as much to go to a needy P4 with lots of cash and opportunity

what happens if Odom leaves and tries to encourage the two to follow him to XXXX univ and pays them double

just so much constantly in flux in this new age of free agency, and lots of money floating around - expect lots of mid majors to move on for the next school that is willing to pay them more for their services - I would too if I had those skills

and no I don't wish any of that above occurs BUT.....

It’s important to remember I said may…..unlike Zeb and Max, Joe and Phil were forced to miss games in November and December of 23 due to transfer
Per the consent decree

The NCAA shall provide an additional year of eligibility to any Division I student-
athlete who was deemed ineligible to compete for a season or any portion of a season of competition
occurring during or since the 2019-20 academic year because of the Transfer Eligibility Rule
provided the student-athlete:
a. transferred between two member institutions more than once;
b. is currently enrolled at a Division I member institution; and
c. is currently eligible to compete, or their eligibility expired at the end of a season
of competition completed during the 2023-24 academic year.

While the language of the consent decree tries to cover all basis, the one thing at question I do not see is how have a Covid year factors into eligibility. Thus my statement of may…..

All valid points. On a side note , revenue sharing and not having football is going to be good for VCU.

2025 Estimates

Our available money for player payments will be on par with most P4’s for MBB thanks to “salary cap” and no football

Does VCU have a Capologist? Is not, give the job to @rollins77 ? We need someone on this who can gives us accurate numbers during portal season and he needs a raise.

not having football will help but just because we say we are going to pay players - don't assume VCU has raised the money or has a reasonable chance of raising

Ed made a point of saying months ago they had not identified where it was coming from and how much

many P4s are getting $50-100 million annually in media distributions and payouts from football etc (VCU getting iike $1 million annually from those sources)

most P4s already have identified the sources of their $20+ annual salary payouts

IMO, VCU hasn't (but your point is still valid we don't have football to worry about, )

would love for any posters with real intel to share where the VCU money is coming from for the talked about $5 million in payments to athletes (seems to me the money needs to be new money and not a reallocation from within because VCU is not talking about eliminating sports)

go rams - would love to hear solid facts here

Narrator: No one needs to give us accurate numbers before, during, or after portal season.

It saves on all the usual forum conjecture and debate on whether VCU has enough money to buy a roster...at the some I expect college teams will be able to trade players...so a capologist will be needed.

Do you think "saving" on the "usual forum conjecture" is a goal of the AD? I sincerely hope they DGAF what drivel is posted here. I suspect they would be perfectly happy having us wallow in our ignorance, and if anyone in the department spends even a second thinking about what we do or do not know or what we post, I'd be depressed.

yes, but it is time for Fats to step up, Hill has a great stroke from three an at the end of the game vs UR he was the point guard and looked comfortable leading the team. Jennings defense and ball handling have been solid all season, recently he has shown he can drive it to the basket and finish and shoot the three. Add a portal guy or two and we are okay. We should be better inside next year. So, looking forward to it.
