the first time was in 2001 when we both were recruting winston brooks, a highly touted PG out of Huguenot high school...didn't qualify and went the juco route. spent freshman year at a juco in texas and sophomore year at a juco in idaho. came down to us vs. gonzaga...we thought we were going to get him and that he was coming home...it wasn't to be...the zags got him and he became their starting point guard after dan dickau went pro. he didn't put up great #'s but he was a solid 2 year player and started at point his senior year...hopefully this time around the ending will be different !

If I remember correctly, this is the kid that wanted so bad to come to VCU, but imply told the staff "he couldn't" while in tears, and after expression his dire concerns over the "attitude" of Mac McCarthy. Anyone who knows this story should post more. I won't do it, but I know it was a total mess, and a nite-mare for the kid. He really liked VCU a lot.

I also believe that part of the problem was also a few of the players' parents / families. Bo Jones and Lamar Taylor's families were somewhat involved in the mess that was going on behind the scenes. Add to this the recruitment of Kevin Steenburge and Jai Lewis, and there you have it. The beginning of the end for that idiot Mac McCarthy. Throw in the train (and court) incident at Hofstra on Long Island, the movie tix, the dry-cleaning, and every other disgusting thing he ever did while at VCU, and finally.... the game was over. Thank God. Then we were able to move on to better things with JC3.

Tell us what you really think of Big Mac, Rambo

incident at Hofstra on Long Island
The incident was at Wagner. I was there and it was embarassing for the university.

This was McCarthy's last season and he was losing control of his team (it's not like he commanded a lot of respect to start with). The Wagner gym is middle school sized. I'm not kidding - much smaller than Towson which I would describe as high school sized. There was no one there, except some families, two or three groups of children - like a cub scout outing - and about 5 VCU fans. You could hear every word said in the gym.

Mac's team played awful, getting it's tail kicked by Wagner's 6'5" center. Frustration grew, Mac appeared clueless. He and Josh Clark got into a big snit at a timeout with both Mac and Clark dropping f bombs on each other. All this was clearly visible and audible to the fans in attendance. The whole thing was bush league and classeless -- under-performing team against a lower mid, out of control with no discipline, fighting with each other.

I was embarrassed for VCU. A few weeks later the wheels came off the bus at W&M, another loss featuring a player punting the ball into the stands. Mac was said publicly to have resigned at the end of the season, but we all know different. Capel was hired and one of his first moves was dismissing Clark from the team. Capel had my respect from then on and he did a phenomenal job of cleaning the messes Mac left behind.

Wow - what a wild story. I knew Mac had a number of issues...that was a real low point in the program. I do remember the W&M game.

Like I always said, Capel brought VCU back from the dead...VCU hadn't had a quality coach since JD, until Capel.

Capel built the foundation, Grant put up the walls, now Shaka will put the roof on this house.
