While this is certainly something we had no control over, it is interesting to see how important cultivating relationships early on are in the recruiting process. Would have been scary if he had committed to VCU. Hopefully Shaka stays long enough where we can get a guy like this to VCU.

Bob Jones guard Levi Randolph said he knew early on where he wanted to play college basketball.

"I just wanted to weigh my choices,'' he said Wednesday shortly after signing and sending a letter of intent with Alabama. "I had 13 offers. I just felt (Crimson Tide coach Anthony Grant) could make me a better person, a better player.''

While the 6-foot-6 Randolph said playing in Tuscaloosa would make it easier for family and fans to see him play, staying in state wasn't a priority.

"If (Grant) as still at VCU and they recruited me, I probably would have went where he was,'' said Randolph

Yeah, I came across that last night. What you're saying is true, though I'm not totally buying what Randolph is saying (though I like hearing he knows about VCU).

Grant better get the Crimson Tide some wins soon, or the guy will be following him to play at Rollins or Barry.

Agree, it's tough to take that statement at face-value. It does speak well of VCU though and the fact that such a highly-regarded guy thought well enough of us to consider committing despite our mid-major status. Just goes to show if you've got a good coach at the reins, some of these highly-touted guys will give VCU a look.

If Randolph came to VCU he'd be downgraded to a 3 star, so it'd be a non issue ;)

Re: 4-star Randolph says he would commit to VCU if Grant sta

This kids statement is less about VCU, and more about Grant and/or how kids feel about the relationships with their coaches/recruiters. VCU is really an afterthought, we didn't recruit him as his statement suggests "If (Grant) as still at VCU and they recruited me, I probably would have went where he was,'' said Randolph"

If we can take this kid at his word he would have followed Grant to Radford or Liberty.

Re: 4-star Randolph says he would commit to VCU if Grant sta

Agreed. His point was to emphasize Grant's role as an authority figure that he trusts to make him better. VCU was not primarily emphasized, nor should it be in an article of this nature. I was merely pointing out that there are guys who will consider mid-major schools with great coaches.

Reggie Johnson (who is the breakout candidate of the year in the ACC at Miami) said similar things about Grant and VCU as well.

Aghhh!!!! Don't mention Reggie Johnson. I love Burgess, but man was I disappointed when Reggie chose Miami over us.

totally agree, it's just like saying he'll follow Grant where-ever, and vcu itself is not very attractive as he suggested.
