ONPSS 6'2 jr A.J. English Middleton (Appoquinimink) DE, offers George Mason, Niagara, VCU n Xavier

Rivals has him listed as a 4 star recruit ranked 71 overall in the nation. Scout has him as a 3-star 19th ranked 2 guard in next years class. Espn had him as an 88 with the following write-up.

July, 2009: English is the son of the former NBA player of the same name. Like his dad, English is a scorer. He can make the outside shot and has a nice stroke from the mid-range baseline game. His release point is a little low, would like to see it get higher and with a better rotation. English shoots a knuckle ball right now, which does not allow him to have a lot of room for error on his shot. He has a nice frame and understands that when his outside shot is not going, he should take it inside to get easy baskets, he does that. He his fast with the ball in his hands to take it to the rim.

Former Howard High standout and NBA player A.J. English has seen this up close with his son A.J. The Appoqunmink guard participated in the Nike Hoop Jamboree in early June and the Nike Peach Jam. His DC Team Takeover AAU squad also won the Orlando Super Showcase. English says that his son has gained interest from Xavier, Virginia, Delaware, and George Mason among others.

“A.J. led the state in scoring, he had no offers on the table,” English said. “After playing on the AAU circuit, he has six or seven offers.”

His father played for Virginia Union so hopefully he has spent some time in Richmond. I feel like looking up the stats, but his father was quite a shooter. I believe he usually shot around 50% and even broke 1,000 points one season. If the son is any thing like the father I say sign him up.

I know everyone wants us to sign all the 4 star recruits we keep offering, but really... How many more guards do we need? We're already speculating at least one will leave after this season from a lack of playing time, and I don't think any of our guards are anywhere NBA-bound just yet. I know J-Rod and Nixon will be gone after 2010 but that still leaves us with Daniels, Theus, Grayson, and Brandenburg. I'd rather see a few more small forwards for Brad to show the ropes. Or at least another PF/Center. I know it helps to be deep, and I love that these higher caliber players have interest in us, but I just don't see the need for all gthese guards unless some of them don't pan out.

So by the time he ever showed up we would have 4 guards, no 5 since you forgot Gavin...1 senior in Gavin, 3 juniors in Daniels Theus and Grayson and 1 soph so it could stand to have a freshman.

I wouldn't get too worked up about any thing this early in the process. Also we should be filling 4 or possibly 5 scholarships that year so we could afford to fill a couple of spots early with highly rated players and then focus any specific needs as they become more evident. Ed, Joey, and Brandon will actually all be gone by the time the 2011 class comes in so I don't see a problem with adding at least 1 more guard to replace the 3 that will be leaving. I think we would be lucky to sign this guy. I am glad that we are involved with him early on. I could see him picking up some big time offers over the next year.

Albert J. (AJ) English led NCAA Division II in scoring and was the D2 Player of the Year in 1990 wearing Virginia Union maroon and steel. The 6-3 high riser out of Howard High in Delaware was the Bullets' second-round draft choice in '90; in '92 he averaged a commendable 11 points per game for Portland.

English was among the last players recruited by VUU coach Dave Robbins before the SAT rule came into play for Division II. Charles Oakley, Terry Davis and Jamie Waller were others who landed at Union before the SAT hurdle had to be dealt with.

I've often felt the D-2 SAT rule was the "Oakley Rule;" forced into action because the Big Timers were irritated by the likes of an Oakley, out of Cleveland, going to a small, historically black school. Nowadays, he'd probably spend a year at a prep school, then sign with Ohio State.

Shifting gears, I was at VCU today (Market cafeteria, then Shafer Court) and saw all players except T.J. Gwynn and Gavin. They were congregating at Franklin Street Gym for some kind of team session ... Pish (on bike) and trainer arrived together; Rodriguez and Saintill walked together; the others came individually, all around 2 p.m.

Larry, especially, looked very happy. Skeen, quite the physical specimen, was wearing flip-flops. Graham showed good quickness, dodging traffic at intersection of Franklin & Shafer.

It is interesting that quality candidates are considering VCU. We are moving in the right direction.

Thank you so much for the information bighorn! Your updates are like a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day! I assume you are speaking of Grayson as opposed to Graham (we don't have one). You are excused as slips like these are to be expected for a man of your many years. With those years come great stories and anecdotes that we all love to hear, so that more than makes up for it! Keep up the great work!

Thanks, In-Fred-ible Hulk; good to know I'm always on your mind ... kind of reminds me of an old Willie Nelson song ... more on A.J. English: I saw him connect for an incredible (not in-fredi-ble, but incredible) 50 points at the Ashe Center ... and Union still lost to N.C. Central, with then Gov. (and VUU alum) Doug Wilder in the house.

Here's what is really amazing about Union ... the Panthers have won three NCAA Division II titles, but VUU's four biggest names, regarding NBA exploits - Charles Oakley, Terry Davis, A.J. English, Ben Wallace - were not part of any of them.

One of the stars of the first Union championship team, in' 80, was the same Willard Coker (nickname Coker Cola) who is the head coach now. A standout forward on the second title squad, in '92, was none other than Robert McKie, father of the much-sought-after Travis McKie, the scintillating John Marshall High senior headed to Wake Forest.

Robert McKie, about 6-8, 250 in his playing days, began his college career at Auburn, under Sonny Smith, and actually saw starting time as a freshman. Interesting that both McKie and Smith moved to Richmond, to within about a mile of each other, but to different schools.

Class adjourned.

Not only on my mind, but in my heart. I am with you body, soul, and spirit. Sometimes I feel like we are the same person when I read the wisdom flow from your posts. Only many years of experience can result in such profound thoughts and stories. I think I speak for everyone when I say we are happy to be your pupils. It is a privilege to draw from the ages-old wellspring of knowledge that you supply. Class adjourned...I wish it would never end! :D

It'd be great if the "2" of you could quit douching up the boards

class adjourned, Bighorn??
Seriously...I'll put up with your scatalogical dribble...but leave the hubris out, 'kay? It's not very becoming for a man your age
