Are There Better Jobs Than VCU, Butler?

"some of the ugliest success this side of Steve Buscemi." Nice

Good piece. Thanks for posting.

Obviously I would say no. It all depends on if you want to make 2 million for 3 years or 1 million for 20 years. They just gave a few of the examples of guys who have left smaller programs and never had the same success at the larger programs. Don't forget that Butler's former coach Todd Lickliter, who Stevens worked under, left for Iowa after reaching the Sweet 16 and earning Coach of the Year honors in 2007 and never had a winning season or played in a post season tournament. Now he is out of coaching (after 3 seasons at Iowa) and Butler is doing just fine without him.

Obviously for Shaka at this time and place in his life the answer is no. He has a lot going for him right now. I started to list the positives that he has attained and I could go on for paragraphs. But above all he has the support of his wife, the AD, the University and indeed the entire community. He has some very exciting players in the program and some exciting recruits coming in. He also has 1.2 million reasons over 8 seasons. At least in this neck of the woods the world is his oyster. Why would anyone trade that for a possibility?

Capel too for that matter

Yep, had that great run with Blake Griffin at Oklahoma, got to the Elite Eight but now hes out of coaching for now.

VCU coaches that were hired away from us:

Kirk - made it to at least one Final Four at Memphis, but was fired amid scandal and ended up in prison for tax evasion.

JD - never had the level of success that he had with us.

Capel - fired.

Grant - two seaons without going to the NCAA Tournament.

All of the above were hot commodities pursued by bigger programs. Kirk and Capel had brief success, but not pretty where they ended up.

Capel is a little different because he did have some success at his next destination, there are several examples of coaches who left successful "lesser" programs and never had a winning record or post season appearance.

also, Capel put in a bit more time here, and didn't jump out as soon as he was hot

Plus he came back last season to take his whooping like a man. Ironically if he hadn't been so loyal (or unwilling to move) and left Oklahoma after reaching the Elite 8 with Blake he would likely still have a coaching job right now.

I remember when we hired Sonny away from Auburn. We thought it was a major coup because of his success and his Virginia connection as well as placing a couple players in the NBA. There was a grand reception for him at the Convention Center. Had a terrific sense of humor and full of one liners. He had limited success with a lot of Jucos, but really he considered it as a retirement job....And then it got worse with Mac.

True, like a Todd Licklier at Iowa as mentioned earlier in this thread.

This question is relative to where the head coach is as a person, his goals, family choices, etc. Shaka answered that question with a resounding "NO" and I'm thankful for that. Many on here know that it takes a special kind of person to not run for the paycheck and big name, and rather build something special at a Mid-major program.

I was disappointed. I wanted David Hobbs. With his connections to the university, the region and his energy, imho he would have had great success here. He started well at Bama, but just couldn't sustain it. We had an opportunity to hire a hot young coach and instead almost drove the program into the ground.

Yeah, Sonny was great with the one liners and as a banquet speaker, but he had lost the fire in his belly.
