Are we underrating Darius Theus?

Now that we currently don't have anybody else, are we overrating Darius Theus?

A week and a half ago when we still had Eblen and G.J Theus was just some guy that was going to get minutes but nothing more than that. Now that he is our only option many here feel that he is going to be much more than the supposed third option he was two weeks ago.

Valid question Merc. We won't know 'til the season starts. Despite playing for Boo Williams (one of the more recognizable AAU teams), neither Scout nor Rivals had anything on him. ESPN had a great evaluation of him, but they aren't 100% all the time either. We have Maynor's high praise of him, which counts for something. Look all our recruits are obviously all-world to us when we sign them, and obviously they don't all pan out. The season will show how capable Theus is. Either way he is a freshman and he will make mistakes and likely tire towards the end of the season, as most frosh do. There is also the well-documented freshman wall that newcomers hit at some point mid-season. We have to hope he is as good as advertised by ESPN.

Personally, I'm glad we still have two schollies to play around with. I love the flexibility/possibilities.

I'm not a big fan of the small PG and it didn't sound to me like these guys (Eblen/Vilarino) had sweet deep strokes, strong bodies, ridiculous quicks/hops, outrageous handle, lightning speed, etc. (other skill sets that more than make up for their lack of size/strength and help differentiate them from the pack). But who really knows (w/o seeing them firsthand)?

When 6'3" Cam Long entered GMU as a frosh, he was already a better PG than Senior Jordan Carter (IMO).
When 6'2" Eric Maynor entered VCU as a frosh, he was already a better PG than Senior Alexander Harper (IMO).
When 6'4" Devon Moore entered JMU as a frosh, he was already a better PG than Junior Pierre Curtis (IMO).

There are some young kids that can step in right away and be factors. Maybe Darius (6'3") is one such player, we shall see.

I like big PGs, 6'2" and over. Particularly versatile ones, those that can score, handle, penetrate, D up, stroke the trey, move their feet, board, dish, finish in traffic, lead, etc.

I love that we still hold two very precious schollies. The opportunities are still endless. JUCO transfer, D-1 transfer w/ a sudden change of heart (sits a year of course), late signing, international player, overlooked (under the radar guy) senior, etc. Many options still in play.

The core 11 right now is solid. I think you can grab a solid contributor with the 12th schollie and then take a chance w #13 (D-1 transfer, project, etc) if you want. Perhaps we can even hold #13 and see if we can secure a mid-yr D-1 transfer (a la Skeen) over the X-Mas holidays.

Solid first post Mozingo. Also, glad to see you finally made it on! Still not sure what happened with that

But, none-the-less, glad you are here!

You do have to love the size Theus brings to the position. Love Joey, but he had no chance at scoring in the paint (let's be honest his shots were constantly getting blocked if he attacked the basket).

I wonder what kind of handles Brad has. I can honestly say I haven't seen him dribble the ball that often but I've never seen him make the sloppy mistakes I've seen from just about everyone else on the team. Just a curiosity... I'd love to see him bring the ball up some against State or Union in the exhibitions.

Slam Online listed Theus as one of the notable spring signings around the country and the only one to a non BCS school outside of DeAndre Kane to Marshall.

Not even three weeks into his job, new Virginia Commonwealth University head coach Shaka Smart landed his first recruit when Darius Theus committed to the Rams last Monday. The 6-3 guard out of Norcom H.S. in Virginia, was also being recruitedvcu by Washington State, Liberty, Duquesne, East Carolina, among others, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. According to ESPN, Theus visited VCU and Virginia while also considering Marquette. After averaging 17.2 points, 6.2 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals his senior year, Theus becomes the first recruit for the Rams’ 2009 recruiting class.

That coupled with the fact that Eblen has slipped to an 85 and the #69 PG on ESPN while Theus is an 89 and the #21 PG on ESPN, and I think that we may have ended up with the better player of the two. 8-) We'll be just fine.

I'm gonna love the Roll Call chant this year considering how many new names will be chanted. It would have been nice to chant the names of some others players if they hadn't left and or transferred. Well at least we can make sure our new players and transfers get a warm welcome.
