RICHMOND, Va. – For four years, 42 seniors donned the Black & Gold of Virginia Commonwealth University and gave it their all.
Wednesday afternoon, the VCU Athletic Department took time to thank those seniors and give them the recognition they deserved at the Annual Student-Athlete Awards Banquet held on the floor of the Stuart C. Siegel Center.
"It's really something the whole department looks forward to every year," VCU Athletic Director Norwood Teague said. "These student-athletes have given all they have to this university and athletic department for four years. It's our chance to thank them for being tremendous ambassadors for VCU Athletics."
Several different individuals were recognized for going above and beyond.
Baseball’s Justin Wright (Yorktown, Va.), Tim Rusterholz (Lewisville, N.C.) of Men’s Track & Field and Cross Country and volleyball’s Laryssa Goncalves (Curitiba, Brazil) earned the Athletic Director’s Team First Award.
Basketball standouts Eric Maynor (Raeford, N.C.) and Quanitra Hollingsworth (Chesapeake, Va.) garnered the Ram Award for their outstanding athletic achievements, while women’s basketball guard Radoslava Bachvarova (Varna, Bulgaria) was presented the ACE award for her excellence in academics.
Women’s soccer senior Megan Flanagan (Franktown, Colo.) and Emil Lindgren (Stocksund, Sweden) of the men’s tennis team were presented the Black & Gold awards for their excellence, both athletically and academically.
The final award of the luncheon was the Michael Brown Award, given to the student-athlete who most represented the ideal VCU student-athlete. Martin Schaulhauser (Karvina, Czech Republic) of the men’s tennis team earned that high honor.
