Ben Eblen is re-opening his recruitment

No use crying over spilled milk, one door closes another one opens. Besides, if a player is not 100% sure this is where he wants to be its better to part company anyway. Best of luck to him.

Alright, we have two open scholarships. Obviously, our main target is G.J. If G.J. commits, I hope we go big with the other. Who's still available for '09?

Isn't it kinda rare for someone to re-open their recruitment and return to the school they originally committed to? I'm not sure I would investment a whole lot more time on him at this point.

Any chance that he still comes? Maybe he takes a look at some other options, takes another look at VCU, and still wants to come to VCU. Or is VCU out of the picture at this point?

VCU is still in the picture for Eblen, we're just going to have to recruit him all over again.

I agree! At this point, if we sign G.J., I'd rather Eblen go elsewhere.

Yup. It is...and you're right. Don't think that isn't lost on Shaka either.

I feel alright about that then. A lot has changed since he signed with us back in the fall. I would rather he get to know the new staff and base his decision on that rather than come here and later realize that it is not the right fit for him. Hopefully he can get the information he needs to make a decision reasonably quickly so we can move on with our recruiting needs if necessary.

Pav sorry to ask a question that you basically just answered, you must have snuck that post in while mine was going though.

Someone just told me he asked for a release and should be received tomorrow. This absolutely sounds like he's planning to change his mind.

At least we have Theus. I'm pretty sure things would be a lot more bleak if we got this announcement before his commitment and we were looking at starting Gerard Smith at point guard.

I'm going to be really freaking pissed if we look back in four years and say.....remember how that All-American PG signed his LOI with VCU before opting out?

You wouldn't be the only one.

I disagree. Obviously there's something he's not comfortable with and I don't see how checking out other schools would make him more comfortable with VCU. I don't think we need anymore players with one foot in and one foot out. I'd rather have a slightly lesser player who is happy to be here than a better player who is coming on somewhat shaky terms.

I say just move on.

Guys... don't forget that we still have one Brandon Rozzell on this team. I'm not insinuating that he is the second coming of Eric Maynor, or even that he is a star point guard. But I firmly believe that he can handle the Point, and that if he had to take the reigns for a while, we will not lose games (necessarily) because of him. I understand that heis more of a 2-guard for sure. But he was highly regarded coming out of H/S as a "combo-guard," much like Theus, and i saw what I needed to last year to really believe that if he had to run the point as a junior..... he could do it.

Again, not saying this is our best option. But I really think Brandon can get it done for us, if we have to go that route. The staff will have all summer to work him in that role, and hey- you really never know what exactly Mr Theus may be capable of. Again.... not the best option right this very minute, as far as we know. But again.... you just never know. Plus.... Mr Smart is not done yet. We are going to be fine, fellas.

I guess what bothers me the the most is, assuming he's a great player, he'd be a STAR at VCU. He would be in tournaments with the chance to be a Cinderella, he'd have a great experience, and he'd be loved by the fans.

Oh well, everything happens for a reason right?

Then again, maybe he just wants a free two day vacation to Pepperdine, or Coastal Carolina :?:
