Big man play tonight: Thoughts please.

At this point I don't know how anyone can say that DJ ought to get minutes over Hinton. DJ gets winded very quickly due to his weight gain.....thus he would be very ineffective at this point if he stayed in over putting Hinton in.

Personally, I would like to see our guards at least try to get the ball to Hinton and/or DJ when they are in the game. Whether they should shoot/be allowed to shoot the ball is up to the coach. But it would at least provide and inside-out option over only going to Skeen. Perhaps ball handling is suspect and that is the reason. But currently the role of DJ and Hinton is to function as a screen at the top of the key while on offense. They need to be more integrated into the game IMO....but I suppose it is a building process.

Nice to see Reddic come along. He and Brandenburg are really starting to impress - and they are only freshmen to boot!

But our bigs do need to work on rebounding. They played a lot of minutes last night (as compared to other games) and we were still massively out rebounded. But then again our bigs are very young and inexperienced so that likely has a lot to do with it.

We, very rarely, get a tranisition basket after an opponents made basket. So having th closet guy to the ball inbound isn't that big of a deal. With that, I don't understand why we have DJ inbounding the ball. That just causes him to have to exert his limited energy hustling to catch up. Unless the other team is pressing, why not let someone else inbound and let DJ glide down the court?

my thoughts: Let shaka coach, seems like playing 1000 extra big men doesn't automatically equal more rebounds. At one point in the first half I saw the rebounding margin 33-19, not in favor of us! It may not be pretty at times but Shaka is fine. Last night I give a lot of credit to the crowd at the end, they were gettin up!

I said weeks ago I'd like to see Reddic start and Brad play the three. In addition, that we play DJ a little more. However, I wasn't naive enough to think that giving them more minutes and playing Hinton would solve our rebounding difficulties. A couple freshmen and a walk-on? Unless they're named Larry Sanders, isn't going to happen.

In the past, there were many games where guys like Maynor, Shu and JPR stepped up and came up with some nice rebounding numbers. It has to be a team effort. Guys have to go get the ball, like Rob did on that play last night. Good things happen when you get your nose around the ball.

I love how people want to throw the freshman in there whether they're ready or not but at the same time are ready to jump off a cliff and hang the coach with every loss or if we don't beat teams by a certain margin.

I would bet the coach is probably playing Hinton because he has shown in practice he understands where he's suppose to be on the court more so than Haley. I'm sure his ceiling of potential is lower than Haley's but what is his charge, develop for the future or win games now? You see how close these games are, one or two possessions either way could decide the outcome.

To me, one question I would be critical of is why did he sub Hinton for Burgess with under 5 minutes in the game. Drexel was at the free throw line so we were about to go on offense. Didn't understand why he took Burgess out for Hinton and it seemed like he didn't understand either.

How about we just leave Reddic in? He's a better player and he doesn't seem to have any problem running up and down the court.

The refs won't let us, once you rack up 5 fouls you have to go sit in timeout for the rest of the night.

I don't think anyone claimed that starting another big would completely "solve" our rebounding woes. From what I am gathering from this quote...

"We're going to need to find someone who can go in there and rebound the ball."

...we are struggling to find any player on our team that can really go out there game in and game out and rebound the ball. Suggesting that we start another big was just stating that if no one on our team can really rebound except by chance, then starting another big should at least increase our probability of getting a rebound. The ideal goal would be to out rebound the other team each and every game. That's not the expectation though. I think it would suffice if we were able to out rebound the other team more times than not and cut the margin down immensely when we are out rebounded.

Basketball is a game of runs and matchups. Wether our not you get a big lead you have to expect the other team to make a move. The key to good coaching is countering the move. Last night Bruiser couldn't do so and he lost his cool on what he thought was a bad call.

"Small Ball" works against a team like Drexel because they aren't very big but they are tenacious quick rebounders. As such, they are going to beat the big guys to the ball most times. Especially, inexperienced big guys such as those we have.

However, at the end of the day as our young big fellas gain experience with on court minutes, and extra practice time practicing blocking out we will get results.

We are very lucky to have DJ, and Juvonte in the same class and also have a sophomore walk on with the type of body and coordination as good as Hinton. It is my guess that as they continue to get 10-20 minutes per game and continue practice we will see significant improvement over the next six games or so.

Yes, Juvonte was out rebounded by some of our guards it happens. But he also out scored and shot at a better percentage than most of our guards last night as well. Haley and Hinton perhaps didn't show up in the stat line but be sure that their size and presence had an effect on the game last night.

Keep playing them we will see results. Also, Jamie Skeen's stats didn't look good but wasn't he really hustling, rebounding, getting after loose balls, when he couldn't get them he tapped them to his teammates or at the very least out of Drexel players hands. Also, his defense looked good.

Yes and yes. Especially the part about Jamie. He has always played with heart but last night he was playing with fire. I am more and more impressed with that young man after every game. Box scores don't show the impact he had last night.

Haven't read what everyone else has said...but I was pretty impressed with Reddic last night. 8 points in 14 minutes is never bad. TRUTH be told...he kept us in the game early with those baskets. Displayed an ability to make the high percentage ones in close, and had a nice little jump shot as well. I like his potential.

Again, on the rebounding thing.....Hinton and Haley combined to play 22 minutes without getting a single rebound! Add Reddic to that mix and the trio combined for 36 minutes and only 2 rebounds! Hinton and Haley's 22 minutes also resulted in zero points scored.

I would love to see a breakdown of that game and what the score was (+/- stat from hockey, might be the most underrated stat in all of the ridiculous stats in sports!) when we went small with Brad at the 4 and Jamie at the 5 that many posters think has been the death of this team. I'm willing to bet that we looked a lot better in the scoring column (that is still the one that matters most, right?) with that lineup than we did when we went big!
