Pre-game discussion in Commonwealth Room last night it was mentioned that a "big recruit" was to be coming in for Akron game, and that we should make him feel the love of Ramnation. Anyone have insight as to who this might be?!? Easier to make him feel the love if we know who he is, although I know staff cannot divulge.

Also I take it this also portends poorly for Larry's likelihood of staying (as brought up in another thread based upon his post-game comments) as we are still strongly recruiting bigs for next year, unless another schollie is opening up.

Good question. Only unsigned bigs I'm aware of are Donte Williams (who already visited) and Santoine Butler (whom we have not offered).

And if it's another recruit for next year, that'd mean another current player that'd have to go...

Hopefully this is in reference to a '11-'12 prospect.

Jon Graham we offered and is somewhat local in MD; Eric McKnight though from Raleigh; Juvonte Reddic also NC; Delino Dear (MD).

Correct me if im wrong but I think Ellis said that the recruit was coming from far away.

Sorry, but I'll get excited when we start getting 4 and 5-stars into the Stu. We have been recruiting highly-regarded 2 and 3 star recruits for several years now. I get that the program wants to hype up recruits and get the fanbase excited...but these 'big-time' recruits are usually the same calibre player that we've had at VCU for awhile now. All of the aforementioned guys are players that no one has heard of and are just starting to shine, or good mid-level to low major players. We've been recruiting this type of player, it's not new. I don't get the whole announcing of big-time recruits coming in when there's no way to know who they are or anything about them to legitimize the star status that should be getting us riled up.

I don't know if Larry is gone till he says he is. Did anyone catch what he said last night in the post game show that he said Akron might as well be a conference game since he will have played them all 4 years he was at VCU. He went on to mention that he will play them next year. Not putting to much into it, but that tells me he does not know he is leaving for sure if he is speaking of playing them next year for the 4th time. If this was brought up sorry to repost, but did not feel like digging through everything to see if it was.

There's a "big" (6'8) guy that's currently flying under the BCS radar (to the best of my knowledge), mainly because he hasn't played AAU ball. I think he's a sophomore...so who knows how big he'll be by the time he gets to college. I'm pretty sure he was at a game earlier this year, hopefully it's him.

tough to get excited about a sophomore not because he wont turn out to be really good or huge if already 6' 8" but if he does blossom unlikely he would stay under the radar from the BCS and end up here.

I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but I have to say F BCS schools. I am of the thought that high quality players would want to come to programs like VCU, Gonzaga, Bradley, etc. because they will get the chance to play often and early, and because the school has intangibles that some (most) BCS schools do not offer. For example, a strong fan base and a close knit but urban campus lifestyle. Rather than go to say an Arizona State or Texas Tech, where yeah they play in a major conference, but honestly still won't get the exposure or playing time they need to get to the NBA or professional leagues in Europe. With Eric, and in the future Larry, already proving that playing for VCU, you will have the oppurtunity to showcase your skills and play at the next level. How many Texas Tech players got drafted into the NBA last year? See what Im saying?

They have had more NBA players come out of their program than we have. Using one year and one especially good player as an example that we are a better pro factory than Texas Tech is somewhat absurd.

What a kid looks for in a college differs from prospect to prospect. Some want to be able to say they played against the best of the best when all is said and done. In that regard, we can't beat out a team like Texas Tech, who plays Kansas and Texas at least once every year, and even more national powers in non-conference tournaments. Some want the prestige of being able to say they played at one of the premiere basketball schools in the nation. Again, 9 appearances and 5 wins all-time in the NCAA tournament is more than a lot of schools can lay claim to, but we're not going to out-prestige Texas Tech.

I trust Coach Shaka to go out and get good players that fit in his system, even if they aren't big-name five-star prospects. If you haven't heard of them yet, you will once they get in our program and start making some noise on the national level.

I was in the room when Mike made the reference to the 'big time recruit'... I thought he also mentioned he was 6' 11" but I may be wrong.

The real take away from me wasn't so much there will be a recruit for the Zip's game, but how he made reference to '...we don't recruit anyone over 6'8"...LOL' (or something to that effect). I knew he & Robbie read these Boards, but kind of funny to hear him address specific comments made by posters here.

Yeah, it is always kinda funny when they bring up something like that. I will catch stuff like that watching the Rams Replay on Sundays from time to time. They might not post but you can tell that they are reading.

He did say 6'11" and I thought he said or implied it was someone from the west coast. BCS schools and us have offered.
