"Big recruit" in Saturday for Akron BB Game?

Larry could be Theo Ratliffe

or

Hilton Armstrong (who?...exactly)

He's gonna have to work a lot harder then he has in school, that's for darn skippy (not that he's been slackin'...but the NBA is whole 'nother moster)

To get this thread back on track....whomever the recruit is, It can't hurt for him to know that VCU basketball is NOT some backwater locale where you toil in anonymity...it is a place where you will get noticed provided you rise up and crush some dudes...including Akron EVERY YEAR. Are they in the CAA yet??

This "Big recruit". Do we know that he is a 'biggie'? Or just a big time=awesome player. I'm asking because I'm not clear.

I'm hoping for both! :D

not saying that any of this is BS by any means, but let's remember that not everyone who tells you something is doing so from a position of total and objective transparency... salesmanship, spin, and artful advocacy are frequently in play

Anyone know if it is Darrell Haley also known a D. J. Haley? Listed anywhere from 6'9" to 6'11" about 215. Iowa St has offered and UPenn is interested, so he must be a good student.

Bingo.

was at work today and guy in my office said VCU offered a top recruit from Sumpter, SC?

Didn't we have a guy from there before? Maybe Vince Wilson?

Bingo.

Kid has a 3.8 GPA. So yes, he is smart.

Again, classic case of hyping up a recruit. Kid is 6'11, 225 so he's 'big' in that sense. Kid is a 78 on ESPN, a 2 star on Scout, and unranked on Rivals (although users rate him as 5 star, which really means nothing). I assume the kid has a ton of upside and is a great player that no one has discovered yet. Iowa State is a school we should recruit favorably against as they pretty much stink. UPenn is hardly a basketball power. I'm excited about this guy and hope we land him, but there isn't anything out there on him that screams 'big-time recruit'. I honestly hope he can be our next Larry Sanders...but it's not nearly what it was pumped up to be. The same for Juvonte Reddic (our 'program-changing' recruit) who was a 2 star and had a couple of major offers. We have been recruiting these kinds of fringe major, high mid-major kids for a number of years now.

This. There's nothing wrong with it...and it's a good way to get the fanbase excited. That said, we've seen this several times before. VCU's coaching staff is great at finding diamonds in the rough and getting fringe major guys to come here and have subsequently been very successful on the court. I'm sure the staff will build the team as well as they can using all the possible resources they can. Haley sounds like he would be a nice addition. Heck Larry Sanders was less lauded and we've all seen his progression in college. I would love to see that from Haley. If the AD thinks it's a big-time recruit for us, I'll take them at their word, even if the recruiting sites all say otherwise.

More on Haley:

On the season Haley is averaging 13.7 ppg, 10.6 rpg, and 3.2 bpg along with 1.1 assists and 1.6 steals a game.

–DJ Haley, 6-11 post, Palmdale (CA), Class of 2010: One kid I’d never heard of before going into Pangos was Haley, a long, thin post, whose first action came before the actual games started, when former Hornets and USC assistant Dave Miller drafted him into being a demonstrator during the workout portion of the camp. I liked his gusto in the drills and my high hopes for his game were confirmed in the five-on-five sessions, as well, where he displayed nice aggressiveness, solid post moves and a presence in the paint. While the strength and conditioning coach needs to become his best friend in college, Haley has a high ceiling, due to his athleticism, strong finishing ability and heart in general.

• One of the top sleepers out West is 6-9 senior Darrell Haley (Palmdale, Calif.). He has a terrific lengthy frame and good hands. He is a tad mechanical and is still very raw, but the upside is there.

Darrell (DJ) Haley 6’11” 2010 Palmdale (Palmdale CA)

Center with terrific length isn’t always consistent but the significant upside is impossible ignore in light of his terrific grades, solid work-ethic and his passion for the game.

Sounds good to me. Sign him up.

Agreed. Sounds like a Larry Sanders clone. I'll take long 6'11 guys with tons of upside and lots of heart any day.

Here's a pic of Darrell Haley Jr. It's copyright protected so we can't post it here but you can view the photo by clicking on the link. He looks a little thicker than Larry did coming in and is 2 inches taller than Larry was coming out of high school. Larry was 6'9, 200 and Darrell is 6'11, 225. He looks like a good big, especially for the CAA.

We got some West Coast exposure last year playing UCLA and Nevada, and again this year with Nevada. Expands the recruiting net a little.
