Sadly, the talented Northern Soul/Country singer passed away Oct. 7 in his sleep ... Famous for "Down in the Boondocks," "Cherry Hill Park" and "I knew you When," the North Carolina native performed at old Franklin Street Gym in either 1968 or '69. He was a big name in music at the time and VCU was proud to host his concert. I didn't go, but remember peeking in and listening from that alley behind the gym. Billy Joe had a distinctive, kind of quivering voice that will never be quite duplicated.
For those who have never heard it, "Cherry Hill Park" was considered very controversial in those days .... "during day time Mary was a teaser, come the night she was such a pleaser."
