PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Standout performers step up among the elite competition.
The Virginia Commonwealth University men’s track & field may have found one of their standout performers for the next couple years in freshman Ronnie Black (Newport News, Va.).
At one of the most highly touted meets in the country, the Penn Relays, Black cleared 6’ 6 ¾†to claim fourth-place in the high jump.
“We feel like we are really set up well for the next couple years,†Head Coach Julian Spooner said. “Ronnie is one of a big group of younger guys that can really be big performers for us over the next two-three years. He had a great weekend at a very prestigious meet.â€
Part of that younger contingent shined in the relays as well with sophomores Antonio Norvell (Portsmouth, Va.) and Donnie Seward (Richmond, Va.), along with freshman Brice Matthews bringing home top-30 finishes in both the 4x200 and 4x400 meter relays.
Norvell, Seward, Matthews and sophomore Mike Nkwanga (Haymarket) stopped the clock in 3:14.70, good for 30th overall in the 4x400 meter relay.
That same trio joined freshman Kyle Jones in the 4x200 meter relay and broke the tape in 1:26.38, good for 22nd overall.
“In a meet as big as the Penn Relays, I thought our young guys really ran well. It’s definitely encouraging for the future of this program,†Spooner commented.
The Rams will have a busy weekend coming up with the George Mason Classic on Saturday afternoon and the Duke Twilight Meet on Sunday.
