Email from athletic department:

"The Men's team will then finish out the week as they will take on Akron on Saturday in the ESPN Bracket Buster game. Tip-off is at 4:00 p.m. and the game will be nationally televised on ESPNU!! THIS GAME IS AN OFFICIAL BLACKOUT, SO COME DRESSED IN BLACK! Be sure to visit the Barnes & Noble @ VCU for great deals on black VCU t-shirts!"

I have said this numerous times, and I hope the people with power are reading this.
We (meaning the University, Barnes and Noble, VA Book Company, etc.), need to work together to organize 3 games yearly. Where we wear white, gold, and black to certain games. With this you market before hand with the actual "official t-shirts" being sold around campus for any and everyone to buy in advance. Heck they can even sell them at a lower price because if you have a good marketing plan and implementation, you should have no problem selling a high number of these shirts at $10-15 a pop. Several universities do this for both football and basketball. This is a big time opportunity for the University, and a great image for television, with a high majority of the fans in attendance wearing the same shirts. I would snag up all 3 shirts each and every year, and I know students alone would make this worth VCU's investment in a program like this. But heck, what do I know, I'm an unemployed recent VCU marketing grad. Anybody hiring?

The students usually do a pretty good job with these things since they are on the e-mail list. It would be good if they are able to plan them far enough in advance to announce it at game though. That would probably help out quite a bit with getting the season ticket holders involved. Banana's suggestion is a great one as well.

I would say put it in the RTD but....

1. They probably won't run a gameday article
2. Nobody reads it anyway
3. F the RTD!

Did they make announcements about it at last night's game?

FSU is having a blackout this Sunday against Clemson. During last Sunday's game against BC, they made several announcements to remind people.

F FSU!

The only way a "goldout" or "blackout" works (at VCU anyway) is if they give away the t-shirts at the door!

Well this is just par for the course

all of our black outs or gold outs have been something put together last minute

could even be the perfect time to get some ad dollars

Put it every where VCU blackout/gold out sponsored by insert company here

Great point, heck it's not like we don't have great opportunities for sponsorship with it also.

Can you imagine a Black Out sponsored by Dominion Virginia Power or a Gold Out sponsored by Goldschlager?

I love a good Gold Out or Black Out, but when they are started on a Wednesday they typically dont come out very well. Hopefully they will be giving away some shirts at the door because Im sure more students own gold than black. My only black VCU shirt is the Village one from from 08-09.

bandwagon!!! j/k i know i had atleast a week worth of vcu shirts by the time i was a sophmore, black/gold and white, poop 7 years later i have close to 40 shirts, its hurts to lay them to rest when they are worn out

Gold Outs and Black Outs are always fun. A White Out at Siegel would just seem weird since that's more of a ODU thing.

Side note: I've noticed the Black Out seems to work better. Even the West End is nearly blacked out. During Gold Outs the East End is completely gold and the sides have a good amount of gold but the West side is about half gold.

hahaha yeah 40 is a bit more than me. Ive got no more than 10 or 12 but when I thought about it just now Im seriously lacking on the black shirts. Up until my senior year I was still wearing my dad's old VCU shirt from the late 70s but that is more of a dark grey now and Im no longer a size small
