Bones Hyland - NBA Thread

One of the Clippers better trades:

Asked Shai Gilgeous-Alexander about Intuit Dome and what comes to mind when he looks back at the Clippers trade.Shai: “I had a great year here when I was here. Their front office made a trade they thought was better for their team. So did the Thunder. In the last five years I’ve tried to focus on my development and the team’s development… And I’d say it worked out in my favor.”
for other posters - the trade was Paul George for SGA and lots of future draft picks (one of which was used to draft J. Williams a starter and excellent player for Oklahoma)

it was the classic contender trade in that Kawhi Leonard (Clips) wanted PG13 to give Clips better chance to win immediately (Kawhi was also going to be a free agent at season's end so Clips wanted to give themselves the best chance to keep Kawhi also and stay competitive - the old squeaky wheel veteran gets what they want , which is all too familiar in the NBA today)

Problem remains that Clips Leonard can never stay healthy for a full season as well as PG13 is often out too

Kentucky Ram is right that Oklahoma got the best of this trade if you look at it now but neither seem likely to win championship,

go Bones and hopefully back east

yup & PG13 is now in Philly..... and well the 76ers are the 2nd worst team in the East (ahead of only the Washington Wizards.... no shock there).

While the Clippers are 6th in the west.

They didn't pick up the option on his rookie contract. He's still on the team but he becomes a restricted free agent after this season.
Thanks WW. I thought they cut him. Good to know he is still on the team and working to get his next K. He is in the same position as Memphis’ Laravia. The Grizz declined his option the past two years.

Looking at the box from last - another great outing for Bones! Speak well to his work ethic to be able to come off the bench and immediately produce.
I'm hoping that Bones being a spark off the bench as well as his improved maturity helps him get a spot on another team quickly if the Clippers decide to part ways. He's been a much more complete player as of late.

One good thing about maturity, if you hang around long enough maturity should improve. Bones, has been in the league for a while, and I am certain his experiences with both the Clips and Nuggets has let him know that if he is to stay in the league, he has to focus on his game.

We are all certainly rooting for him and his success.

Problems are
A-Will always be remembered by NBA execs as the guy who couldn't blend on a championship caliber team, complained about his role, and left the bench during a game
B-Was sent home from a road trip with the Clippers in Feb '24 for, again, complaining/showing frustration with playing time

good news is that he logged serious minutes in his last 2 games (12/4 23 minutes and 12/8 28 minutes) so maybe that is a trend we can see moving forward....my concern is that the NBA executives will be leery of guaranteeing Bones any serious years/money this next FA cycle unless he can keep his frustrations in check AND improve his defensive rating. Most metrics have him as league average to slightly below league average on the D side....

I'm hopin it goes his way in the end, I love seeing VCU Rams in the pro ranks.

yeah those problems you described can linger in some executive's minds for awhile but if someone can make your team better that often wins out

serious minutes were becasue 12/4 game they mailed it in after being down 40 points to Timberwolves early in the 3rd : end of the bench got serious run thereafter

and 12/8 game Harden did not play (groin injury was reason but my guess is they had the next 5 days off so they just decided to give Harden 10 days off to load manage) - so 35 minutes opened up at the point (Bones entered play to start 2nd quarter and played well so got even more run in the second half) also missing T. Mann sg that game too

Baby steps so to speak - but absent longer term injury to Harden and another guard ahead of Bones in the rotation, Bones needs a new start somewhere else

go bones

Fair points....honestly, I was trying to fine some optimism with the recent PT.....Every year, the NBA drafts amazing (and affordable) talent once you get out of the Top 5 or so picks.

I have ZERO clue what BH's FA prospects are gonna be this offseason. The talent is clearly there, the defensive desire is mostly/occasionally there, his ability to "blend" onto a winning team may(?) be there

I figure the question is what kind of dice to NBA GM's wanna roll? Play it safe? Take a chance?

Not sure that eh “will always”. He just has to keep working and not do anything out of the ordinary except work harder.

There are many reports where Bones is listed as someone who can help as a backup pg who can score.

Miller is a good player. The Clippers actually look better without George and Leonard. Maybe the coaches will figure it out and put Bones back into the rotation.
wow (PG13 isn't with the clips anymore and Kawhi will make them better , when he returns- both are on the downside of their all-star and maybe hall of fame careers for KL but still everyday NBA starters)

don't hold your breath about Bones being part of the rotation anytime soon, I just wish he woud be traded so he gets another chance to get meaningful minutes

Bones is only getting mnutes on this version of the Clippers if the two point guards ahead of him get injured, or Harden sits for load management or the team is in a blowout game (reality is the Clippers can pay anybody $2 million less to fill the role Bones finds himself in as the 11-13th player in the rotation.)
