Bones Hyland - NBA Thread

I'm biased, but this is wild. He's better than a decent portion of NBA players. He's not a fringe talent. And anyone who watches the NBA enough can tell the dig on his defense doesn't carry much weight anymore. Is he a lockdown defender? No. But when you look at other players that have his level of offensive explosiveness, he is doing just fine.

He cleared waivers with Atlanta Feb 10th...no news is bad news, unfortunately. Literally ANY team can sign him at this point and it's been more than a couple of weeks.
If a team picks him up, do they have to cover his contract? That could be an impediment.

I wish Bones all the best and enjoyed watching his talents at the Stu. But I suspect some of the off court stuff has created his bed and left a bad taste within the league.

Hope I’m 100% wrong but suspect this is the “thing”.

Serious and honest question. What does Bones at excel at in the NBA that would make him a value add? If you look at any metric and take actial, per 48 or per game, he doesn't crack the top 10% in any category. Just curious where you or others think is his NBA value.

A lot of players add value to a team without being top 10%. Not saying that he will get signed but that is a high bar.

Plenty of season left, sadly plenty of backcourt injuries will occur and Bones will get a call to finish the season. I hope it will be on both a contender and one that needs him in the rotation. It stinks, but you could see this coming back in Denver a hubris was exploding with the highlights. A rising start needs to be a subtle start until ascended and consistent or they are a distraction and distractions are overly critiqued. I feel Bones will have a new opportunity to build forward in the future. I hope so.

He posted a 37 point game last season. Just the potential to have that type of offensive production will cause a team to at least think about him. Now he may have also given up 47 point on the other end.

I always thought he would be Immanuel Quickley 2.0. The difference seems to be Quickley is very coachable and worked hard to become an above average defensive player. Not sure if Bones has proven to be either.

You could make the argument that MR coddled Bones too much while he was here and that didn't do him any favors at the pro level.

Don’t get me wrong as I am not saying he doesn’t have NBA level talent. I think his approach maybe what turns most GM’s off. It takes more than talent to stick in the NBA. I just don’t know what the it factor is that will make him stick

as I understand - if a team picked him up during the 48 hours he was on waivers then the new team picks up the contract

if no one claims him in 48 hour period he becomes an unrestricted free agent whose new contract must comply with at least the minimum for a 4 year NBA player (or is 3 years)

Atlanta Hawks are still paying him under his old contract ( what I don't know for sure is if he signs a new unrestricted free agent contract now are the Hawks free from their obligation to pay Bones under his old contract or is the amount of the new contract offset in whole or partially against the Hawks obligation through the remainder of the 24-25 season)

Googler is not helpful to me

I am inclined to ascribe to your view!

below is from an article that from what I read over the last few years was the most common rap against Bones in his career, (some here will agree and some disagree of course )

"Hyland is a talented scorer, but has not been able to stick in the league so far due to the other aspects of his game falling short. He started his career as the backup point guard for the Denver Nuggets, but his shortcomings on defense and as someone who can initiate offense for others and the team as a whole made it tough to play him in a playoff series. He never consistently earned playing time with the Clippers for the same reasons."

The Hawks are only responsible for whats on his contract right now. Since he cleared waivers.... if another team picks him up.... he'd essentially be getting paid by 2 teams at once.

Diff sport but I'll give you an example,

Denver Broncos cut Russell Wilson at the beginning of the 2024 league year. They still owed him $37+ Million dollars. He cleared waivers and then the Steelers signed him to a 1 year $1.2 mill contract. So this past season.... he got 37 mill from Denver & 1.2 mill from Pittsburgh.

So whatever is owed to Bones for the rest of the season by the Hawks (since they took his contract on via that trade).... they owe him. If someone else decides to pick him up between now & the end of the season.... He'll be collecting 2 pay checks.
