Bones Hyland - NBA Thread

Don’t get me wrong as I am not saying he doesn’t have NBA level talent. I think his approach maybe what turns most GM’s off. It takes more than talent to stick in the NBA. I just don’t know what the it factor is that will make him stick
I think it starts with defense. Even though people claim nobody plays defense in the NBA, you at least have to put up some resistance if you're not a James Harden-like player on the offensive end. Plus at 6'2"ish with a slender build, he's going to have to play point guard and develop prime playmaking and ball handling skills.

Or he could find a niche as a Lou Williams specialist getting buckets off the bench. I've read in the past Bones having some type of clash with coaches. Not good if you're currently a fringe NBA player who can be easily replaced.

He cleared waivers with Atlanta Feb 10th...no news is bad news, unfortunately. Literally ANY team can sign him at this point and it's been more than a couple of weeks.
He was supposedly going to LA but with the Knecht deal falling through they didnt need him.

The Hawks are only responsible for whats on his contract right now. Since he cleared waivers.... if another team picks him up.... he'd essentially be getting paid by 2 teams at once.

Diff sport but I'll give you an example,

Denver Broncos cut Russell Wilson at the beginning of the 2024 league year. They still owed him $37+ Million dollars. He cleared waivers and then the Steelers signed him to a 1 year $1.2 mill contract. So this past season.... he got 37 mill from Denver & 1.2 mill from Pittsburgh.

So whatever is owed to Bones for the rest of the season by the Hawks (since they took his contract on via that trade).... they owe him. If someone else decides to pick him up between now & the end of the season.... He'll be collecting 2 pay checks.
Rowdy, the new team could essentially sign him for a dollar as the Hawks are on the hook for his contract. Most likely there would be a by out.

I am inclined to ascribe to your view!

below is from an article that from what I read over the last few years was the most common rap against Bones in his career, (some here will agree and some disagree of course )

"Hyland is a talented scorer, but has not been able to stick in the league so far due to the other aspects of his game falling short. He started his career as the backup point guard for the Denver Nuggets, but his shortcomings on defense and as someone who can initiate offense for others and the team as a whole made it tough to play him in a playoff series. He never consistently earned playing time with the Clippers for the same reasons."
From what I've seen of Bones in the NBA I would agree with the lacking defense, but not being able to initiate offense for others is a crazy statement, crazy!

Interesting signing given the fact they have Dillingham (a Bones-esque) player in development. That being said Dillingham looked woeful the other night when I was watching the T-wolves.
