Eric Maynor was a great player for VCU. Thanks to his heroics against Duke and UCLA in the NCAA Tournament, Maynor put VCU on the national map. However, it is possible that the Rams may be a better team without Maynor this year.
In the weekend victory over Richmond, the Spiders executed a near-perfect game plan and forced VCU to play almost entirely in half-court sets. With Maynor at the helm, the other Rams would have deferred to the point guard, letting him use his athleticism and quickness to get to the rim. However, without Maynor, they were still able execute and shoot 42.2 percent from the field.
According to new coach Shaka Smart, VCU may have found its post-Maynor identity in the Richmond win: "We're a team in transition because we're trying to figure those things out ... Other times, like the second half, it looks like we've established an identity for this new team."
