The biggest storyline coming out of VCU's win over ODU today is that the Colonial is looking more and more like a one-bid league. ODU is no longer at-large worthy, and neither are George Mason (which has now lost two in a row) or Northeastern. VCU has the best at-large chance now, but they still have a lot of work left to do.

Seems like our home win vs ODU did not help us as much as I had hoped, despite their RPI under 40. We need those road wins (and the rest) to have a realistic shot at an at large bid.

Anytime time you win at home and your RPI improves, it is good. Want to see a bigger jump? Beat GMU on the road.

Yeah we won't get in as an at-large simply because we have no good road wins. Our best road win is probably at Hofstra (177 in the RPI). That's pathetic for an at-large team. We have some good wins (RI, Nevada, Oklahoma, Richmond, ODU, W&M) but all have been at home. The selection committee will hold that against us and they would have a legitimate case. Road games at George Mason (133 RPI), James Madison (245 RPI) and ODU (38 RPI) are all that remain. Our only chance to get up a good road win is at ODU. If we win that, we have 1 good road win. It's still probably not enough to get an at-large bid but if we win out going into the CAA tournament we'll be 23-5 and with a couple more wins in the tournament going into the CAA finals we'd be 25-5 with a top 40 RPI. That would be tough to ignore.

Yeah our road wins have been less than stellar. Hofstra isn't even a top-half CAA team and that would be our best road win. A 7th place CAA team is our best road win of the season. That's not going to cut it for an at-large unfortunately.

Well in order for us to even be considered for an at large don't we need to win out our remaining reg season games, and if thats the case our best road wins would be Mason and ODU.

Yes. Mason wouldn't be considered a good road win though with them sitting at below 130 in the RPI. ODU is the only road win that would help our at-large profile if we won out.

Pretty freaking stupid to say a road loss to your arch-rival disqualifies ODU from getting an at-large. If we were to win out (including a bracketbuster win AT Northern Iowa) and picked up wins over VCU and GMU and then made the final of the CAA tourney and lost, we'd be 26-8 with our only bad loss at GMU (hardly a bad loss though if you know college basketball) and wins over VCU, a sweep of W&M, a 33 point victory over the first place team in the A-10 Charlotte, a good win over Marshall and road wins at Georgetown and at Northern Iowa (hopefully).

How the heck would ODU not get in with that resume? Some people just don't know sh*t about college basketball. Sorry to threadjack, but thats a pretty bogus statement that ODU is no longer "at-large worthy".

I agree razor. until you become a fan of a mid-major school (i.e. VCU, ODU, Mason) , you dont know $h1t about mid-major basketball. i currently do not know what George Mason's RPI is, but i know for a fact that is is below 100. we play @ The Patriot Center on Tuesday Night nad it will be a brutal game because 1) Mason is a good team and 2) they, just like VCU and ODU, are very tough to beat at home. if we win that game, our RPI will not move much, and if we lose, our RPI will lower even though we are playing a very good team. like i said earlier, un til you follow a mid-major school, you do not know $h1t about basketball

Who is this guy and why should we care what he has to say?

ODU and VCU still have a shot at making the Tournament. Plenty of basketball left to play.

The lack of understanding around here about how RPI works is frustrating... seems to stay constant no matter how many times Rick, I, or someone else try to explain it.

Even sadder is how simple the formula actually is.

there's nothing, no matter how simple it is already, that people won't oversimplify given the opportunity

I've watched Northern Iowa play at least 3 times this year. No way will the ODU team that showed up to the Stu Saturday comes out of Northern Iowa with a win. Their building will be just as loud as the Stuu was Saturday and they are a very good team.

I would also be curious to see whatODU's success would be against Georgetown if they played at the Verizon Center in DC versus that high school gym. Playing Georgetown @ McDonnough (sp) was a huge benefit to ODU. I don't understand why Georgetown would play ODU there a second time after losing to them before in that same gym.

I just enjoy the games, and I've really enjoyed the last 9 or so. Here's to about 11 or 12 more enjoyable ones.

3 CAA teams in Lunardi's Bubble Watch:

Virginia Commonwealth [17-5 (9-4), RPI: 52, SOS: 142] The Rams handled Old Dominion 70-58 on Saturday, winning their fourth game in a row to stay in the Colonial Athletic Association race. VCU's victory over the Monarchs was its third win over an RPI top-50 opponent. It also beat Rhode Island 82-80 at home on Dec. 2 and Richmond 65-57 at home on Dec. 12. The Rams also have victories over William & Mary (home), Nevada (home) and Oklahoma (home). VCU is 3-0 against RPI top-25 foes and 6-4 against the top 100. It plays at George Mason on Tuesday and at James Madison on Saturday. The Rams were swept by Northeastern and split games with William & Mary. The Rams have one big blemish on their resume, losing at RPI No. 118 Western Michigan 83-67 on Nov. 18.
