Earlier this week, we wrote that NBA advanced scout Pat Zipfel of the Houston Rockets could be considered for the job. Brian Mull of the Wilmington Star News delves into the coaching muck to come out with some possible candidates (if Brooks Lee is nothing more than an interim coach).
The most popular name: Kansas assistant Joe Dooley. Dooley has been in Lawrence for 8 years and although the most popular choice (according to Mull), he makes $300,000 a year and is one of the highest paid assistant coaches in the country. Would he take a pay cut to be the next head coach at UNCW?
Other names include Steve Forbes (Tennessee assistant), Pat Kelsey (Xavier assistant) and Russell Springmann (Texas assistant). Two other names are sleepers and could be great selections. One is Mike Lonergan at Vermont, a more than capable head coach who has continued UVM's success after Tom Brennan left. For our money, we really like Lonergan and a move to the CAA would be the natural step up from America East. Also, as a former Maryland assistant, he definitely still has the recruiting contacts.
The other name: Brad Brownell. Mull confirms that if Brownell was contacted, he would listen to the pitch.
As this situation develops, we will keep you informed.
