Earlier this week, we wrote that NBA advanced scout Pat Zipfel of the Houston Rockets could be considered for the job. Brian Mull of the Wilmington Star News delves into the coaching muck to come out with some possible candidates (if Brooks Lee is nothing more than an interim coach).

The most popular name: Kansas assistant Joe Dooley. Dooley has been in Lawrence for 8 years and although the most popular choice (according to Mull), he makes $300,000 a year and is one of the highest paid assistant coaches in the country. Would he take a pay cut to be the next head coach at UNCW?

Other names include Steve Forbes (Tennessee assistant), Pat Kelsey (Xavier assistant) and Russell Springmann (Texas assistant). Two other names are sleepers and could be great selections. One is Mike Lonergan at Vermont, a more than capable head coach who has continued UVM's success after Tom Brennan left. For our money, we really like Lonergan and a move to the CAA would be the natural step up from America East. Also, as a former Maryland assistant, he definitely still has the recruiting contacts.

The other name: Brad Brownell. Mull confirms that if Brownell was contacted, he would listen to the pitch.

As this situation develops, we will keep you informed.

Won't happen. I think his in-laws are in Wilmington, but even then, no way. Why would he go back to UNCW, a job that is now almost certainly lower than Wright State? Brownell is in line for a BCS job, not a backwards move to the Dub. I know it's tough to admit for the UNCW fans, but they are a basement program right now, past successes aside. Brownell would have to go back and rebuild the program and if he's not successful he'll be fired and no chance at a BCS job. He just needs to stay the course at an already established and successful Wright State and in a couple of years he's moving on to Big 10 job, it's that simple. I'm sure UNCW will get a good replacement for Moss, it's still a good job, but the Brownell ship sailed long ago.

Plus, you think the incompetent folks in the UNCW AD are actually going to admit they were wrong and hire the guy they ran off? I doubt it.

I hope they don't hire Russ Springman - - he was on our short list, so I am sure he's good. I like the dub being down.

LOL they lost to UD

this is like watching your once prominent uncle have his drinking catch up to him.

Jerry Wainwright is available. He's also the most successful coach they ever had. I could see him coming back to UNCW. To me, Wainwright makes a ton of sense to hire to turn the program around. He knows the program, has name recognition and it's also the school where he was the most successful. I'm sure he would be good with the alumni also.

Someone within the UNCW administration made it public that they would NOT be considering Wainwright.

And why would he want to return? I don't even think he would consider it if they did ask him to come for an interview.

Probably because he just got fired from DePaul and no other BCS school is going to look at him. He was very successful at UNCW and it is the beach.

I believe he makes his permanent home in or near Wilmington. Regardless, it was said by someone involved with the search within their AD that they would not be interviewing JW...

would we take Capel back? Grant?...to leave, fail at the next step up, then go back to the school that gave you the chance to move up and say...gee gosh darn it..I sure would like to come back....
didnt work for a couple of girls I dated...LOL
but then again it did work for a couple others
