Brandon Jennings is returning to VCU!

These players who put themselves in the portal are more than likely gone including Jennings. Let's move on wish them well and concentrate on our players returning and find some valuable replacements. The money offered to them is hard to resist and the new college basketball is here.
Just because guys enter the portal when a coach leaves doesn't mean they won't come back. This is a really poor take on the situation especially how loyal the Jennings family is to VCU.

I am not saying he did the right thing by transferring or that he did better by transferring. I am simply saying that playing late into March or April and possibly winning a national championship, even if it's the NIT is a success. And I can pretty much guarantee had we won the NIT last year, a lot of you all would be touting it....some using it to say how good we are, should have been in the dance, the BE should take us now because while it's not the NCAA championship, it is still a national championship and we took down all these teams, blah, blah, blah.

How many of you here would seriously turn down an invitation to the NIT? I don't think most of you would do that even when you consider the NIT so below the NCAA that it is a joke.....yet you would not turn it down.....and you would be ecstatic if we won it all.

Look, all I am saying is DeLoach had a misstep going to UGA imo. I think he would have advanced more as a player had he stayed at VCU. But with the move back to the A10 and Loyola he has had a chance to play deep into a post season and/or possible championship. Good for him. He didn't end up riding pine with nothing to show for it.

Sheesh, some of you out that can only see in terms of black or white.

Wearing No. 0, Johnnie was an interesting story.

From Hampton, he earned CAA All-Rookie honors in 00-01, averaging 8 points and 5 boards .....

the 6-4 power forward transferred to a JUCO and returned to Broad Street in 03-04.

It didn't go well. Johnnie failed to get into the game in a preseason exhibition and he wasn't sticking around.

Don't know if he ever went anywhere else .... while there were many high points, recall Johnnie trying to guard Mason's George Evans in Fairfax. Ouch.
I think he went to Boise St. I know it was way out west and Idaho rings a bell with me.

Well this is what people wanted. Not just the players... but the fans as well. A lot Fans thought players should be getting paid (and more than just Free Education, Free Room & Board, Free Meal Plan, Stipends & w/e else kids were getting before all this). A lot of fans said "Well coaches can just bounce around from school to school anytime they want without having to "sit out a year"... the players should be able to as well without having to sit a year."

Well guess what..... now we got it. All those people got their wish.

There's a famous phrase "Money is the root of all evil".... well congratulations.... everyone just made Money the primary root of all evil in college athletics.

People (everyone.... fans, players, administrators, NCAA themselves) didn't think of the consequences that one or both of these things would create by allowing them. In regards to the transfer portal.... now more so than ever... players are committing to the coach(es) not the school. In previous years.... yeah you were committing to the Coach.... but you also had to like the school & the environment around in, to be willing to commit to it long term.... because.... you can't just up & leave whenever, without having to sit a year...... Not Anymore. And obviously regarding NIL.... players are risking throwing away their college careers and/or potential post college athletic careers for NIL money.... that they may or may not ever receive in full or in part.

Lemme ask you this.... lets say you're at a job that you like, pays decent.... but while driving around town or surfing the internet.... you see an ad for a job hiring thats in your line of work and would be a step up from where you are, both from a job title stand point & financial stand point.

Are you going to think about it, maybe even apply & possibly accept an interview for the job? Or are you gonna be like.... "While that job seems interesting & would be an upgrade to where I am now & what I'm making now.... but I'm too loyal, so ill just stick it out at my current job. Most people, especially now a days, would probably at the very least apply/take the interview.

Well thats exactly what all these kids in the transfer portal are doing too..... thanks to everyone who wanted all of this for the players.
You got the phrase wrong & it's from the Bible - LOVE of money is the root of all evil. Money itself is neutral.

Why are posters still obsessed with Theus becoming VCU's head coach at some point? He's off to UVA. We have our coach. Time to move on. Theus has his future to worry about and VCU fans need to be focused on the present and not some pipe dream that may never materialize.
He told me he would be back soon after he agreed to go to UVA.

No they aren't. PG committed to Fordham. The big fish is Latrell Almond 6-8 wide body. Junior class. Dominates inside. Has a slew of P5 offers. We are gonna have to come up with a lot of $$ to get him..
The PG flipped from Fordham to Tennessee

I don't think your take, nor his take is a bad one.

First off he said more than likely gone.... not 100% gone. And well, statistically he's not wrong. How many players in the history of VCU Basketball have officially entered the transfer portal (even before the "Transfer Portal" became what it is now).... and how many have returned to VCU?

You're prob gonna be quick to say.... Max. Well he committed to Villanova.... the reason he returned to VCU (while unknown officially) was rumored to be NIL or something else. Whatever the case was.... if that hadn't happened..... Max wouldn't have come back.... so leave him out of this discussion for the moment.

Who else has officially entered the transfer portal & come back to VCU without committing to somewhere else first & there being an issue, that led to them returning to VCU.

The only other name that pops in my mind is Joey Rodriguez who left VCU, enrolled in some JuCo school or something? Forgot the name of it.... before coming back to VCU. Every other player not named Jennings or Max that I can think of who has entered the transfer portal... has left (To Be Dermined on Belle, Fats, Luke, Obi, as no official wording has come out about their final decision, only rumors)

Ace, Kern, Banks, Jamir, Deloach, Martin Carrere, Santos-Silva, Wheeler, Lawal, McAllister, Nunn, Ward, Jairus Lyles, PJ Byrd, Tsohonis, MBJ, Nichols, Medley-Bacon, Reco McCarter.... Michael Gilmore (tho he did transfer back a couple years later)

They all entered the portal for various reasons & they all left. At least when it comes to VCU.... the odds are, when you enter the portal..... you're gone & likely not coming back.

Yes, Jennings & his family are local to VCU, his mother attended & graduated from VCU according to multiple people. So yes they have ties to the school. But if they are 100% loyal to VCU, then why enter the transfer portal at all? Who the coach is, shouldn't matter.

I'll tell you why..... because the players don't commit to the SCHOOL..... they commit to the Coach. VCU didn't recruit Jennings.... the coaching staff did.

Jennings committed to Odom & his staff who just happened to be at VCU at the time. Odom left to take the UVA job..... and Jennings entered the portal and even took a visit to UVA. If you're "loyal to VCU" as you say.... why would he enter the portal & why would he take a visit to UVA & other schools for that matter? He wouldn't.

He made a business decision, a wise one at that imo.... to enter the portal, allow himself to gather offers & take visits..... as well as give himself a chance to see who this new coach is, what is this new coach like? Does this coach want me, or is he just gonna recruit over me? etc.

Which in the end, led him coming back to VCU..... which I & a lot of other Ram fans are happy about.

I don't think @senor ram 's post is a poor take at all.... cause statistically.... the numbers heavily favor that once you enter the portal... you're likely not coming back.

Again.... To be determind on Belle, Fats, Luke & Obi, who could skew the #s back closer to possibly returning. But at the moment it's far from a 50/50 split.

Rollins College for J-Rod.

for me, I think there are two categories
  • Coach leaves, player has the ability to enter the portal and if he and the new coach agree its a good fit, have the option to return
  • No coaching change, once the player enters the portal, they need to find a new home

Don't forget Myk Brown who actually played here and did go on to play at Rollins College.
