Brandon Rozzell and Jimmy Martelli return to VCU; Ryan Daly and Chris Cole round out coaching staff

If we are being honest, Phil Sr had/has love for VCU primarily because we gave his son Jimmy an underserved second chance in college basketball coaching after he was forced to resign from Rutgers (April 2013) for physically and verbally abusing players along with former head coach Mike Rice. Also the Rutgers AD was fired as well for trying to protect these two.

Rice hasn’t coached in college since. The AD Pernetti landed on his feet and is the Commissioner of the AAC. The whistleblower who was fired by Rutgers (Pernetti) prior to the news story and video of the abuse hitting the airwaves, Eric Murdoch has never coached again. Sadly he wasn’t involved in the abuse.

So, yeah we honored their family member. However, the true reason is we gave a guy a second chance who likely didnt deserve it nor would he have received it elsewhere.
Considering nobody here knows all the details of the situation, I'd be hard pressed to pass judgement on Jimmy or VCU at this point.

i agree we don’t know anything. people make mistakes and people grow. things get blown out of proportion, but i just looked it up. per espn “In some of the hundreds of DVDs of Rutgers practices from 2010-12 being reviewed by ‘Outside the Lines,’ there are at least a handful of instances in which Martelli grabs, throws balls, shoves and screams at players, including calling one a ‘f---ing f----t.’”

From what I've heard about his head coach at the time, Jimmy was simply doing what the people at the top of the staff were doing. He was a young guy at the time. It doesn't excuse what he did, but it kind of explains it. Jimmy has done his penance and has worked his way back up. I'm assuming he's learned that you don't treat people like that. I haven't spent a ton of time with PMjr, but I find it extremely hard to believe that he would let anything like that go on at his program.

People know all the detail necessary. As a basketball fan, you’d literally have to be living under a rock to miss this. There was plenty of tape released to ESPN and it was huge news when it happened. This is not a secret by any means.

Dude even admitted he was “sickened, he apologized, to players, and hoped all coaches learn a lesson”. So yeah support him if you like. But you the details of the situation are clear for al to see. There were hundreds of damning videos and this was high profile issue.

The HC Rice hasn’t made it back.

Just in case the first article wasn’t clear.

We went thru this when Jimmy Martelli was hired under Rhoades. He did a great job scheduling and worked well with the players. Some people actually learn lessons from past mistakes and better themselves.

I think what @rammad90 is saying that the fondness that the Martelli family has for VCU likely stems from the fact we have looked past Jimmy's misstep and gave him a chance. I have to give MR credit as well. I imagine PM Sr will always have a feeling of appreciation for us and MR for the way we treated his son. I think that carried more weight than honoring his father. And I don't expect any Martelli family member to have to publicly state that. When you know, you know.
Canceling or doxing people for mistakes they make is low level behavior. People make mistakes. People change. Jimmy has proven he is no longer the same person he was at Rutgers.

My point was not to question the charges or condone his actions...my point was to question your comment that "we gave a guy a second chance who likely didn't deserve it nor would he have received it elsewhere". I think, based on some previous comments and the progress he has made since that episode, he did deserve a second chance and VCU should be commended for being an important first step in his getting his life in order.

Exactly. I don't understand how people can't figure this out. It's pretty obvious Will Wade did the same thing at McNeese, given the grace he handled his departure to NC State with.
I can understand it because some people don't learn from the past. The past can be dwelled upon and the future can be stressful. Presently I feel like I need more coffee.

I agree with your assessment of WW. He has put together quite an impressive roster at NC State. His Wolfpack looks like a force to be reckoned with!

The past can make you depressed and the future can make you anxious, so live for the day.

The present is,,,,,,a present.

Posters on these boards certainly know how to dwell on the past. Jimmy Martelli resigned from Rutgers in April 2013. That's 12 years ago! Shaka Smart was still VCU's basketball coach then. Since then, Martelli spent 6 years at VCU under Mike Rhoades with absolutely no problems/issues and posters still want to dig up the past? How about just congratulating him on his return to VCU basketball.
