Brandon Rozzell and Jimmy Martelli return to VCU; Ryan Daly and Chris Cole round out coaching staff

Posters on these boards certainly know how to dwell on the past. Jimmy Martelli resigned from Rutgers in April 2013. That's 12 years ago! Shaka Smart was still VCU's basketball coach then. Since then, Martelli spent 6 years at VCU under Mike Rhoades with absolutely no problems/issues and posters still want to dig up the past? How about just congratulating him on his return to VCU basketball.
I agree. It is absurd to bring up something of this nature that occured 12-years ago. My understanding at the time is that Jimmy, who was young, was basically emulating the tone his boss had set during practices. He was a young and fast rising assistant and got caught up in that failed culture. Lesson learned and he moved on. Like Phil, Sr. and Phil Jr. Jimmy is a good guy and will help take VCU to the next level. Glad to have him on board.

My point was not to question the charges or condone his actions...my point was to question your comment that "we gave a guy a second chance who likely didn't deserve it nor would he have received it elsewhere". I think, based on some previous comments and the progress he has made since that episode, he did deserve a second chance and VCU should be commended for being an important first step in his getting his life in order.
That is always the story line when he is “your” guy. However, if he was someone else’s guy then nah he didnt deserve it. Given that logic we have to give WW the same grace.

Will was a d bag as an individual but I am not aware of him throwing balls and young men’s heads ro publically berating them just because he knew the kids couldn’t retaliate. At the very least WW wasn’t stupid enough to have it video taped if he did. IMO that is as a weak ass move. Had one of those young men knocked his ass out they would have been justified but guys like you would have blasted them. As stated, I never liked WW as a human but as a HC I thought he knew his stuff and I’d welcome a sleaze bag like him before I would an abuser.

IMO no one else would have made the guy their #2 except their brother or Dad and not many folks other than Ed would have allowed it. Why would they? If the former Rutgers HC (his partner in crime) cannot even sniff any type basketball. Job. How the heck does the assistant get to be the #2 at a program the likes of VCU? More over with his baggage, what contribution does he bring that outweighs that? Clearly all the connects he has his brother already has. A fresh set of eyes would have been a better choice for many reason.

However, now he is here and guys will rally for the guy even if he was a member of the Manson family. That is until he leaves and then he will be scum.

What is done is done and done and it wont likely affect our program. However, 2nd chances arent evenly distributed. It seems the guys who get them always look a certain way, and are connected. Further, even without his past his experience still doesnt warrant being a #2 on a program the likes of VCU this isnt a family business. Even if it where its not their family business.

However what is done, is done.

People grow up and change, grace is due both Wade and Jimmy Martelli in my book. Both acted badly in the past and have proved themselves since. I'm glad to have JM back on board at VCU!

You make some solid points. In 2013 it wasn't so easy to transfer. The power these coaches had over these kids in terms of playing time and/ or keeping there scholarship was immense. There is a famous saying "Judge a man's character on how he treats others when he has been given power".
Jimmy was young at the time. The man has worked hard for the past 12 years and hasn't had another negative incident. He11, if people judged me by the decisions I made in my late 20's, I'd be screwed.

we actually don't
Which was my point . We give grace to the guy on our team but the other

In fairness it’s was his mentor’s/HC actions he was mimicking. He easily could have been caught up, and just following suit.

He was a young guy, and that should be considered as you state.

My actual point was regardless of the bad behavior or the absence of that behavior he didnt qualify to be our #2 guy but for the fact, his brother is HC, and the hire could have gone to someone with more value (bigger or different recruiting network, different skill set etc). If we are being honest I think most of us can agree that this is true.

Whatever the case he is here now, and I hope he has his brother are wildly successful.

That is a fair take but the four best coaches don't necessarily make the best coaching staff. There has to be trust, synergy, etc. At this point I think he has a pretty good idea if him and his brother will work well together or not. I have always trusted that our head coaches will do what is in their best interest and the best interest of the team when putting together their staff because those two things are aligned. If it weren't for that issue at Rutgers over a decade ago he could be a head coach by now. You could argue that gives us quite a bit of value in having him as an assistant. I certainly thing we got a great deal on him as a DBO years ago although we were taking a bit of a chance as well. Yes the news articles are still out there but now we are recruiting players that hadn't even started school when that happened. I don't think they will give it too much thought.

Or you could argue which I do, he is a nepo baby. Again, we can tap around it if we like, but it is, what it is.

I for one am glad it was brought back up…I’d forgotten about this …this a bit of a news site isn’t it. One’s opinion about it can be called into question but the story itself should be posted.

Obviously he was brought in because his brother is the head coach. No one is disputing that. That doesn't automatically make it a bad hire though. Daly is here because he played at St. Joe's. Brandon and Brad are here because they played here. These things have always been about relationships.

I think that is where we started. I originally stated he was a nepo hire. Glad we agree. Typical Ramnation fodder.

You state one thing and then it ends up another debate all together.

We need some news because this argument is really annoying every time it comes up.
