JOHNSON NAMED CAA CO-FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Veteran tallies third win in three tries in the long jump
RICHMOND, Va. – There’s something about that final stretch of collegiate athlete’s careers that bring out the best in them.
It is clear that senior Verniece Johnson (Mineral, Va.) of the Virginia Commonwealth University women’s track & field team is putting all she has into her final season after winning the long jump at the Colonial Relays this past weekend. For her efforts, Johnson was named the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Field Athlete of the Week.
The victory was the third in three tries for Johnson this spring with victories at the Coastal Carolina Invitational and the Fred Hardy Invitational earlier this spring.
Along with her victory in the long jump, which included the school’s second-longest jump with a mark of 19’ 9â€, Johnson was a big part of the Rams’ success in the relays.
She was a member of the 4x100 meter relay squad that took home second place with a time of 47.55 and a part of the school-record breaking 4x200 meter relay that finished third with a time of 1:40.38.
Johnson and the Rams will take next week to prepare for the Lou Onesty/Abramson Invitational next weekend before gearing up for the CAA Championships on April 17th-18th at Towson University.
