I was just looking at the collgeinsider.com poll and we have GMU and VCU 3/4 respectively with ODU 14, and Drexel in the 20's. Also, all four are in the top 54 of RPI.

GMU has come on strong of late, VCU has been stay throughout the year, and ODU has had big wins out of conference and losses within the conference.

Given VCU did whip UCLA and other OOC teams, ODU's strong OOC against the likes of Richmond, Clemson, and others, plus Drexel's winning at Louisville, why cant we as a league assert that we make a compelling argument for 3 bids, 2 at large ant the 1 tourney championship?

Let's say that we win 2 of the big 3 bracket busters as well? Why do we have to be a 1 possible 2 bid league?

It doesn't make sense. Does anyone agree, disagree?

I understand the power 6 bias and all that but just looking at the numbers shouldnt the CAA be in the running for 2 solid with a possible 3 bids?

Shouldn't the commish's office be putting out the word?

Thoughts?

The Selection Committee has never made "sense" with their at-large bids for mid-major teams. I'll just copy-pasta what I said in the "RPI Update" thread:

Good RPI doesn't help mid-major teams receive at-large bids. Missouri State missed the dance in 2006 with a RPI of 24 (according to RealTimeRPI). That same year Hofstra's RPI was 22 and they also got snubbed. Meanwhile California (55), Alabama (57), and Seton Hall (58) all received bids ahead of them.

It happens every year. In '06-'07, it was Air Force (29), Missouri State (36), and Bradley (39) snubbed in favor of teams like Virginia (55) and Stanford (67). The next season, it was Dayton (30) and Illinois State (37) left out for Kentucky (58) and Oregon (61). In '08 and '09, Arizona (62) and Boston College (60) got in at the expense of San Diego State (34) and Creighton (40). Last year, Rhode Island (40), Wichita State (43), UAB (45) and Kent State (47) all had RPI inside the top 50 and got left out. Minnesota (62) and Florida State (56) got bids from outside the top-50 RPI. Seeing a pattern here?

Heck, even Power Six smoocher Gary Parrish acknowledges the uncanny pattern of leaving out non-Power schools from the dance. It's a glaring injustice, but one that we as mid-major fans have to live with as long as the Selection Committee keeps being hypocritical with its criteria of who deserves a bid and who doesn't.

RPI, strength of schedule, quality road wins does not trump keep the money in the 6 BCS conferences. That is the bottom line. There is $1BILLION on the table and the NCAA does not like to share, if they share too much the mid-majors could become majors and they deal they have cut already with the BCS conferences could get messed up. This is and has been about the money ever since CBS picked up the entire package. I am older and remember the first two round games being everywhere, TBS, TNT, LIFETIME maybe, CBS did not get them until the sweet 16 or maybe elite 8. When it was like this, teams like VCU could get a #2 seed. The sunbelt conference could get in 2 teams, the CAA got in 2 especially when Navy had Robinson. Long story short, it is now all about keeping the money where it is and not sharing too much.

New to ramnation, VCU alum. Lover of VCU basketball.

Once we win the tournament, I believe Mason will get an at-large (unless they collapse). ODU will wind up getting NIT, no 3 bid year.

"George Mason (19-5, 11-2; RPI: 23, SOS: 70)
The Patriots have won nine in a row after pounding Hofstra and ODU this week to grab a share of the league lead. They need to stay focused this week and win at UNC-W before hosting James Madison. Depending on what you consider, GMU may have gotten a break when Northern Iowa lost O'Rear for the season ahead of the teams' BracketBusters showdown in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
GW: Old Dominion
BL: Wofford (N)

Old Dominion (18-6, 9-4; RPI: 29, SOS: 56)
Could the CAA get three teams in? It's starting to look possible after ODU, with the best nonleague work, continues to linger in third place after getting popped at league co-leader George Mason. This week sees trips to William & Mary and then the other co-leader VCU. Big game, that.
GW: Clemson (N), Xavier (N), Richmond, Dayton?
BL: at Delaware

VCU (19-6, 11-2; RPI: 53, SOS: 153)
After a surprise loss at Northeastern, the Rams won at JMU and stay tied for first. If they can handle the Blue Hens on the road, they're set for a two-game homestand vs. ODU and GMU that could decide the league champ. Remember, VCU also is at Wichita State for BracketBusters, so they have chances.
GW: UCLA (N)?, at Old Dominion
BL: at Georgia State, at South Florida"

key player for UNI hurt for Mason game...weak finishing schedule ...unbalanced schedule benefited GMU this year....they have had the stars align just right for them.
