Donnie Jones is not the only basketball fixture flying the coop at Marshall.

Ripley High School junior guard Chase Fischer said Sunday that Jones' resignation in order to take over as coach of Central Florida made March 29 has led him to rescind his verbal commitment to the school.

Fischer (6-foot-4) finished second in voting for the Evans Award behind West Virginia University-bound Noah Cottrill of Logan. Fischer led the state in scoring with a 32.1 points-per-game average and helped guide the Vikings to a 16-8 record as a junior. He was a first team All-State selection.

Numerous schools have contacted Fischer since Jones left, he said. Wake Forest and Virginia Tech from the Atlantic Coast Conference are expressing interest, and Ohio University and Virginia Commonwealth have also contacted him within the past week.

No chance in heck that we get Whiteside. We actually recruited him in high school...but the kid is thinking about entering the draft after his freshman year! He is very much on the NBA radar and if he doesn't declare...he won't want to stunt his growth sitting out a year at VCU of all places. He could go to any number of major conference programs.

Being realistic is also a valuable quality. ;)

When a widely publicized NBA draft-worthy 7-footer decides to transfer to VCU, gimme a call.

I think Fischer is absolutely a guy to keep an eye on though. That might be more realistic for us.

Anybody who puts up those type of numbers, regardless of the level his high school plays in, catches my attention. Think BA Walker.

Well it seems like the bigs were keeping an eye on him. Fischer was Jeff Bzdelik's first commit at Wake Forest today. Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Ohio, VCU and Wake were the schools talking to him.
