This may be selfish of me to ask because my girlfriend is from Chile and most of her family still lives there, but please pray for the good people of Chile.

You got it! Having lived through two major hurricanes (Charlie and Wilma) in Southwest Florida over the past 6 years, we know first hand how devastating these natural disasters can be. Our thoughts and prayers are with the good people of Chile!

Prayers for her, and everyone else involved in the Earthquake and Tidal Waves created by it. :cry:

it's a terrible situation over there, obviously. hopefully they get the looting under control and bring everyone to safety.
 
Her mother and three brothers and their families live in Santiago - all ok, just some minor property damage. Same for her aunt and cousins in Vina del Mar. They just heard from her uncle (who is like a second father to her) yesterday - he's fine. He lives in the South, closer to Concepcion. They still haven't heard from some of her cousins in Concepcion, but communciations are down so they're hoping for the best.
 
Still can't believe it was a 8.8. It seems there has been a pattern of earthquakes since that fault that was closed for 200 yrs opened by Haiti a few weeks back. Hopefully these end soon so the World can focus on helping Haiti and Chile without anymore disasters diverting their attention. Meanwhile prayers go out to both countries. :cry:

my fiancee was at a conference yesterday and listened to some physicians speak about their recent trip to help the haitians. they said it was so bad that haiti may never recover. they talked about how rainy season is coming, and could wipe out what is left of the most liveable areas. apparently the streets are still littered with dead bodies, excrement, and rubble. all they can do is burn the excess, which is causing widespread pneumonia because of what's going into the air. tetenus, rabies, cholera, you name it. all widespread, and no vaccines. it's all going to get worse as the rain comes. just an awful situation.
 
Hopefully Chile gets some help like Haiti did. I know Haiti was built with cardboard boxes so it looks a lot worse than Chile.
 
Have any of you seen the HAARP stuff on youtube connecting these quakes? just curious as to what you guys thought about it.

Pretty much what I was thinking, but what explains the multicolored auras before both quakes, as alluded to by witnesses and shown in pictures? If witnesses hadn’t mentioned it, I would have assumed it was just video effects by conspirators; maybe they paid these folks to say it? Or playing worst case scenario, what if it is true? What if the capability to create earthquakes exists? I mean, this 8.8 magnitude earthquake actually shortened the length of the day (even if only by 1.6 microseconds). I’m not saying I believe any of it, but I will admit that it is thought provoking.

earthquake lights/aurora have been reported before... they aren't very well understood as they're nearly impossible to study, since they don't happen with all (or even most) earthquakes, and earthquakes aren't very predictable ...but the forces involved with an earthquake... massive friction and pressure... and the results, such as magnetic field disruption and static electricity, are thought to be likely causes for the lights ...it's that the lights are caused by the quake, not that the quake and the lights are caused by the same other mysterious thing

Hahaha, nice reference. I hadn't read anything about connections between the auroras and quakes (and I am working on a geography minor) so I was not aware that this is a common occurrence, albeit infrequent.

Still, the concept of, for a lack of better term, an earthquake weapon... that’s a scary thought! (Enter overweight ODU jokes here)
