Players Christian Fermin is a VCU Ram!

Ferm took lots of flack last season but it is a team game. VCU would not have been able to win the A10 title without him. No way could Bamgboye be the guy by himself down low. The team went with Bamgboye and Fermin throughout the season. It worked. I think next season Ferm will also do his best to fill his role on the team. Coach Martelli has lots of spots to fill so we will see how it goes the next month or two to see what our team looks like.

I will also point out the fact that Christian is a top notch man. He has been a great ambassador for VCU with his volunteering in our community. He can be frustrating at times on the court but he also makes plays on both ends. As a fan watching players…they can all be frustrating at times and the next second they can make an exhilarating play. I am happy that Ferm is finishing up at VCU.
My boss says I can be frustrating to watch at times as well (and my wife says that too).

Fair and reasonable comments here, particularly in this era of player/paid college bb.
On the positive: Fermin is a great ambassador for VCU bb. (Sadly, in this age of mercenary skills this is no longer valued much).
Fermin is 6’10”, athletic, runs the floor as good or better than most P5 bigs, and appears to bring positive emotional support to teammates and coaches. He is getting better with his 5 to 10 foot jump-push floater shot, and is adaptively (3rd coach at VCU) committed to the VCU program. Having campus/conference/culture continuity is a good thing.
We still need a starting 5 big who Fermin can share minutes with while Fermin supports coming off the bench. We need Fermin’s 5 fouls, energy, and matchup contributions as a role player.
So glad Fermin is staying. He’ll be a great teammate as this roster is filled out.

You obviously dont understand basketball. It’s true Fermin cannot score the ball. He cannot. However, he sets good screens many which have led to easy 3’s and layups for our scores. he passes well for a big, he is an ok offensive rebounder, he doesnt get a lot of rebounds, but he does have a lot of tap backs to open teammates.

Now on D. HC Ryan Odom played Fermin more than Luke unless Fermin was in foul trouble. Fermin was number 6 in blocks in conference games. #10 overall. If you love Luke and you should. You must know that Fermin averaged more points, slightly more rebounds, shot slightly better at the line, and was a better on ball defender.

If you watched the games you would have noticed when Luke wasn’t suffocation the other bigs with his shot blocking his was succeptable to low post moves. Ferm while not perfect was better at that aspect. Also, Luke average 2.1 blocks, Ferm average 1.4 as a tandom they did well blocking 3.4 in about 37 minutes.

So it appears that your analysis is based on emotion other than fact. No one is saying Fermin is a world beater on Offense he isnt. If we want him to score he was a liability this year. However, his tow timely baskets in the A10 tournament seem final game was one of the key reasons we danced this year.

Bottom line Fermin is a valuable member of this team. He is also a nice human, he is loyal, and all of our HC’s seems to think he is worthy of a scholarship. Sad you dont. All Star? No. All Time Great? No. Valuable member of the team heck Yes!
Sorry, but your entire post lost all credibility when you claimed someone didn't understand basketball, yet you said he sets good screens. Quite ironic. Fermin is one of the worst bigs I've ever seen at setting a proper screen. Quite frankly and no exaggeration, I don't believe I've ever seen him set a good one. It's like he's either learned nothing about that aspect in the 3 years he's been here or he wasn't taught, or they even gave up on him learning how to do it properly. It also seems like he's not too fond of the contact that screens bring. Now I will say he will get a good seal from time to time near the basket that results in an easy bucket for someone, but setting on the ball screens??? Atrocious.

All he ever does is show and slip, thinking he's going to get the ball like he's an offensive juggernaut (they never pass him the ball, and rightfully so b/c he'd likely drop the pass anyway) and it rarely results in a open shot for anyone in our set when he does it. Compare that to Luke when he sets screens and you will understand the advantage that screening on the ball properly gives to the possession.

don't necessarily disagree on many of the points you articulate but let me add that it is also incumbent on the ball handler to create an appropriate angle coming off the pick so he leaves no room for the defender to get over the pick and then forces the defense to make a REAL decision

have not really focused on the differences between luke and fermin on who performs the roll to the rim if the defense chooses to double or the big defender switches. some bigs have quicker feet and better acceleration from a standstill than others - not sure if this is a factor

but catching the ball yeesh Fermin has led the team in fumbles (Ferm is footballs equivalent of Tony Dorsett with his fumbling)

I love the guy. Most people know he's a sweet, loyal guy. But there is a lot of substance there - he's smart and he has a lot to say.

Honestly, I get pretty frustrated seeing him take shots in every thread. I don't say anything because the "keeping it real" crowd will get defensive.
I mean, Fermin does make some frustrating mistakes, and some of those are definitely on him, but he probably doesn't deserve all the flack he gets. With all the problems he had, he's still quite close to being good and he's done quite a few things that demonstrate his basketball IQ (he's a great blocker and passer and - when he was better at handling the ball - excelled at finding perimeter shooters when he couldn't make a play at the rim).

If Ferm works on his handles during the offseason I would not be opposed to him being a starter, but he seems to perform quite best in a tandem rotation with another strong 5. Get Luke out of the portal or find another post player to supplement him and we're in business, especially considering some of the bulkier 3s and 4s we have (Evans, Mitchell, even Tracey).

Can we all agree we can compartmentalize and separate Fermin the human being and Fermin the basketball player? Not sure why discussing his game has be prefaced with his off court qualities.
