Virginia Commonwealth University, which has discussed launching a football program, has acknowledged an interest in City Stadium and the land around it. Norwood Teague, VCU’s athletic director, could not be reached Monday. University spokeswoman Anne L. Buckley said the prospective developer is not VCU or its real estate foundation.

this makes me happy because the idea of football at vcu makes me sick to my stomach.

They are supposedly doing a study sometime in 2011. I always felt that the Diamond/sports backers area would be better for football at VCU. Just because they deny it doesn't mean that it isnt happening. You dont want to come out and say we are interested and then look stupid if it falls through

I'm with you Merc! Especialy with the rumors that are going around about football realignment and the fall out of it.
Let concentrate on BB and let the big kids play with football.

It has been no secret that VCU wants the Diamond site... bad. Personally I feel the Diamond would convert to a football stadium nicely. However, the situation will the Diamond is so fluid, what the heck is going to happen with it? Are the Squirrels going to build a new stadium on site? The problem is that no one knows. So VCU is expressing interest in City Stadium.

I honestly feel that football is on the horizon, I just have no clue when. But it certainly seems much more inevitable then 5 years ago. Staff actually mentions it now.

I am not for VCU adding football, unless it can be done at the highest level. We can't start off BCS. The two alternatives are FBS and real weak Div I (which there are a whole lot of teams). The difference between the haves and have-nots is huge. I won't support FBS or weak Div I.

Yet, I think there is going to be a shake up coming based on football. I sure hope VCU and the other non-football playing teams are being proactive in planning for the shake up, I don't want to see VCU in a position of having to be comfortable with scrapping together the pieces that are left after realignment in order to put together and be part of a league. It seems like some preplanning could make for an attractive league rather than just waiting for the shoe to fall.

The Norwood chat with Paul Woody yesterday made it sound like he has all intentions of getting City Stadium.
