Cleveland Melvin was a key cog in the Lake Clifton state championship club of 2008-2009, playing for former SU Orange forward Herman Harried along with Will Barton and company. Melvin, who currently stands 6-foot-8 and weighs about 230 pounds, will take his game to Notre Dame Prep next season and has offers from Missouri, Maryland, VCU, Towson St., George Mason and Xavier with Syracuse and Pittsburgh showing interest. He also hoped to visit Connecticut.

his measurements seem to be all over the board and it could just be that some havent been updated but espn has him at 6 6. scout 6 7 190 and the other article at 6 8 230. This might be normal but for espn to call him long and lean and then see him listed at 230 lbs on a 6 8 frame doesnt strike my mind as long and lean considered that is 15 lbs heavier than the landlord.

out of all the names you have found us associated with do you have a group that you would most like us to see recruit and if so chances that those same players end up coming here. thanks again for all the effort.

Really no effort on my part, just set up a few email alerts on google and I just post anything of interest that comes through.

Anybody with the terms "long" and "athletic" associated with them is fine by me.

ok, Chill you have been giving us great leads on players we are interested in but let's see if you can act like Nastradamus and predict the future. Who do you see us signing? Not easy to predict because it is July and the players cannot actually sign until Nov 11th. But we can look back in the fall and see how close you were.

I am going to predict that we sign Josh Henderson from Cave Springs, Va. He is 6'11 and a true center. UVA is not interested and VaTech who showed interest but already has 14 guys signed for 2010, one over. I have read that he is not interested in Liberty, VMI, Radford or other local schools but has heard from JMU. He has not ruled JMU out yet. I would think that if he wanted to stay in state he would pick us over the remaining schools. So my gut is telling me he signs with us.

I also think we will sign a PF from Florida possibly Lalanne or Anthony Lee. Yes this would be two highly rated recruits but our staff is aggressive as heck and they believe in what they are doing. Recruits will sense this and see what we have done in the past 6-7 years and start to believe too.

I'll predict Cameron Black and/or Donte Williams.

We do list him as 6-8, but from memory he seemed more along the lines of 6-7. He's definately in the 220-230 lb range.

thanks for the update. Sounds like Melvin is starting to play well when it counts. I would guess that since he is around 220-230 he plays more like a PF.

Where are the big tournaments this week?

Peach Jam in SC is going on right now. I'll be out at WVU on Tuesday through Thursday. At the same time, the Playaz have a good tourney in North NJ too.

Cleveland is physical, athletic and very productive. I love his game. His weakness though is that he doesn't have much of a game beyond 5 feet from the hoop. At only 6-7/6-8 tops, that scares away a lot of high majors.

Here's a nice video on Melvin. I did not see him hit a jumpshout but heck he dunked everything so I guess he did not need to shoot. He looks aggressive and focused. Said in the video that he was a senior this past school year. Where is he now?

He played for a team that went to state a couple times. I like signing guys that are from winning programs.

I might be negative nancy...but he doesn't really do anything in this video. Ok so he dunks the ball about 30 times, but most of them where wide open which was created by the penetration of the guard. Also, he has to yell after every single dunk and that reminds be too much of Gerald Henderson Jr. (I hate duke by the way). If he was 6'10" and had the wingspan of larry I might be all excited about his dunking. But maybe he is a "mike nice?"

According to his Twitter Coach Smart was in SC I'm guessing he was at the Peach Jam..hopefully picking up some talent for us

"Two postgrad big men with Terps interest impressed at the Hoop Group Summer Classic over the weekend. Dallas center Waverly Austin and former Lake Clifton forward Cleveland Melvin have heard from Maryland, according to NBE Basketball Report.

Melvin, who currently stands 6-foot-8 and weighs about 230 pounds, will take his game to Notre Dame Prep next season and has offers from Missouri, Maryland, VCU, Towson St., George Mason and Xavier with Syracuse and Pittsburgh showing interest. He also hoped to visit Connecticut."

Doesn't look like Melvin's talent is a hidden secret. Offers from Maryland, Missouri and Xavier don't help our chances of getting him.

It's interesting because Cleveland is getting a lot of love this summer. He was on the circuit last year too while playing with a very good Cecil Kirk team and I thought he played just as good. He was a rising SR then too so I don't know why such sudden interest in him when there wasn't much buzz before.
