Coach Phil Martelli Jr. Show, Media Minutes, & Pressers

I watched Phil's presser this morning. Thanks for posting it here, too. I was planning on posting it, but you beat me to it. :D

I'll sound like a broken record here, but for those who always seem to complain about our OOC schedule, just listen to Phil discuss the challenges he's already faced getting anyone in the top 50-75 to play us.

I count myself as one that complains about the OOC schedule beyond the rotation of the top MTEs we play in.

I don't think many of us complainers dismiss the reality that it is tough to get H&H's with top 50 teams , nor that our head coaches , assistant coaches and AD don't try yearly. Even 20 years ago getting top teams to the STU was tres difficult - that is why Dick Sander/Trani came up with the approach to require in their contracts that VCU coaches commit to playing H&H if they took a new job

that we all agree upon

the fact that a few mid major coaches still get quality top 50 H&H's says to me it is possible BUT I think that occurs because of relationships the head coach has established in years of coaching (think Anthony Grant and Dayton's schedule or Maybe Ford when at St Louis) yes the occurrence is RARE

what I heard Martelli jr really emphasize was trying to get neutral site games. Did not hear him say we were trying to get true one-off road games against top 50 teams, without a return game to the Stu (sounds a lot like most all our prior coaches in the past 20 years). To me true road games should not be off the table for VCU. To Quote Ed Mc in his press conference yesterday on the a-10 commissioner retirement, he made the point that when you try the same thing over and over without results you need to take a different approach - 20 years of trying to get H&H at the stu with top 50 has been unsuccessful

IMO VCU needs more Quad 1 games to build its at-large resume - the reality I see is that comes from neutral site games with the top 50 teams or road games with the top 75 - We ain't getting top 30 games at home (outside of the kindness of people like WW or contractual obligations for departing coaches that have the guts to play us at the STU and not buy it out)

Outside of the MTEs, I think it is rare that a P5/4 team will play us on a neutral court because their conference games provide 10+ Quad 1 opportunities. the neutral court games we are getting recently outside the MTE opportunities is with other mid major conference teams (utah st, colorado st. or bottom feeder P5/4 teams for the most part

So VCU needs to accept the fact that the path to more Quad 1 games in the OOC schedule is true road games with top 50 teams - perhaps if we get to be a team that makes the Sweet 16 two out of three years that will change but until then ..............

do we need to play a lot of them? No , let's try and replace one or two of our home OOC games with them -

now my real pet peeve with out non conference schedule is playing so many buy games with teams that are in that NET 275 to 364 tier that we have nothing in common with nor our fans have any interest in seeing (beyond the fact that we are VCU fans and pretty much will watch any game at the STU.)

that is where my biggest complaints reside in the Wagner, St Peters, Coppin St , Samford, Niagara, American, Rider portion of our OOC schedule (yes New Mexico was an excellent H&H when Odom signed that contract - unfortunately New Mexico coach left as did every player on their roster so what was a great H&H now will likely be a Quad 3 game at the Stu - but I fully accept that as a great H&H when it was done and recognize what odom did there)

i could list the Odom 24-25 home OOC schedule of buy game patsies but we all know that too

that said, I have no problem with our home OOC schedule including 3 or 4 of those bottom feeder games but we need to schedule games at the STU with teams with NETs in the 76 to 175 range for the remaining home OOC games

I would hazard to guess that many of the other complainers would agree with what I have laid out above - we don't expect Miracles in our home schedule but a more entertaining home OOC schedule with more challenging games

VCU doesn’t need to schedule more Q1 games to beef up their NCAA Tournament resume. They need to win the games already scheduled. VCU is 0-2 in those type games this year. They had a losing record in those type games last year. Just start winning the games already being scheduled and the rest will take care of itself.

I was impressed with W2’s memory. Recalled a lot of data in his responses without benefit of notes.
Wade has always been a stats/metrics kinda guy, which is why I was able to relate to him quite a bit while he was here.
