Coach Phil Martelli Jr. Show, Media Minutes, & Pressers

Kids a baller. If he can contribute at VCU he can do the same a UVA. Same ball, same size court, same system.

The ACC has worse guards in the league than BJ, for sure. He didn't get a ton of minutes, but he is athletic and obviously works his ass off, and at worst he can earn minutes with his defense. But he can shoot, too, and he's got good size. No reason he couldn't succeed in the ACC

I'm not saying the kid can't succeed at UVA or in the ACC.... and sure @carner0 the ACC may have guards that are worse than Jennings.... so does the SEC, Big Ten and every other conference in America, including our own.... however the ACC even in the down year that it was this year is a step up in weight class.... and while they have guards that are worse than Jennings... they also prob have guards that are far more established & better than him at this stage of Jennings career.

I def recognize the potential this kid has.... and sure going to UVA with Odom he would be in the same system & the size of the court & the ball would be the same..... but the level of play is much better overall year in & year out in the ACC than it is the A10 & the quality of teams & players are much better year in & year out than the A10.

Yup….. not saying he’s a future Will Wade, but there was no guarantee that WW was going to waltz in here and kick ass right away. He inherited a good roster and went 8-5 in his first non-con!

AG and Shaka had zero head coaching experience, Wade has 2 years& Rhoades had 3 years. Odom is the exception with 7 years and 5 of those years were in the conference that Martelli Jr just won!
Looks like Phil Jr coached in the G-League for a year as an Assistant with the Delaware 87ers from 2016 to 2017, so he has pro experience as well

Eugene Burroughs, a former associate head coach at Navy and Penn State, serves as 87ers head coach after serving two years on the 76ers staff.

“I think when the D-League originated it was more up and down, fast-paced, and people would say no one played defense,” Burroughs said. “Now, because the NBA maybe is placing more emphasis on the D-League, guys are getting more coaching.

Martelli, he added, provides the necessary knowledge and experience.

“It’s been great,” he said of having Martelli on the staff. “We have to coach these guys and I wanted guys who’ve had experience. Phil’s been around for a while, he’s been a very good coach and he does a great job of being very detailed and thorough.”

Dan Tacheny is the other assistant coach, with Curtis Sumpter and Mfon Udofia serving as player development coaches.

Tacheny and Martelli handle most of the opposing team scouting reports, which is no small task with a 50-game schedule that runs to April 1, followed by playoffs.

“For me, it was something to try, another learning experience to say ‘What else is going on out there?’ ” Martelli said of coaching pros. “What is going on in this world that can be picked up and can be used where this takes me, if it keeps me at the pro level or if it brings me back to the college level? I’m excited to have this opportunity. I’m enjoying it. I’m learning a ton.”

Brandon was great in his role on this team and has a super bright future. He was poised for a freshman and didn't make too many mistakes. At the same time, if he had a bigger role some of that freshman inexperience would have definitely shown. He was in somewhat of an ideal situation this year where his strengths (defense, hustle) were allowed to shine through and he maybe didn't have to do too much on the other side of the ball other than knock down the occasional open jumper. He's the type of guy that will certainly improve on any weaknesses, but there may be some bigger growing pains against better competition.

Not sure why I feel so underwhelmed with this hire.

But then again, our AD has knocked it out of the park multiple times before. Dunno, just feels a little different with this one. Seems like that next true star up-and-coming coach just wasn’t out there this time.

Either way, looking forward to seeing what Martelli has in store for the program.

Jennings' mom makes it appear that VCU is absolutely still in the mix.... and they aren't just trying to make a quick buck off of his Name or how much fans here loved this kid already as a freshman.

Jennings was never not going to have a spot on our roster no matter who the coach was. Entering the portal is 100% a money move. Don't be gullible.

Well, Bryant had a OOC schedule ranked 80th. Our's was 260th this season.

Also noticed he played NINE OOC road games and two neutral court OOC games. Hopefully that's an indication that he's willing to challenge his team playing on the road early in the season.

hoping that to be the case in how Jr. schedules for VCU (would love games at St Johns or Michigan St) but intuition says Pitino sr and Izzo are less likely to schedule a top mid major like VCU in OOC than a top low major in Bryant but We will see

I would also add the more rigorous OOC might be that is how Bryant have to fund a portion of their athletic budget by playing in 3-5 buy games in the OOC portion of the schedule - just a fact of life for many low majors

I have no problem with how Ed pursued our next coach and like many of my fellow posters trust in Ed's judgment for hiring men's basketball coaches (the fact that so close to Pitino jr signing with X, that Ed had ROs replacement said to me he had kicked all those tires for the 2nd, third and 4th plans in the weeks leading up to this hire)

my guess is he could have gotten all those other we specualated about (turner, huss, morrell et al) but Martelli was the BEST FIT.

good luck Jr.

Strangely, Martelli becomes the Rams' first bald coach .... all predecessors were fortunate to avoid the dreaded Male Pattern Baldness.
I thought Shaka was in this camp but he recently proved otherwise. This is uncharted territory.

i think bc odom was such a great hire. only bc his relationship w ed. that our expectations were very high. from the outside martelli is no worse of a pick than wade, rhoades, and shaka was. he has more experience and is older than wade and shaka were.

Totally agree. Odom was such an obvious home run hire. We cannot expect that every time.

The question was "Is BJ an ACC-caliber guard", not "Is BJ an ACC all-star" haha
