Coach Phil Martelli Jr. Show, Media Minutes, & Pressers

I spoke to a friend early last season who is friends with Odom. He told me that the home & home series was not happening. From what I hear the old staff gave Rockhead many chances to schedule the first game at the Stu. They tried by giving him a bunch of open dates. Nada! Silence 🤐 Another call....Question....So what are you thinking about the game for 2025? Answer....I am not bringing my team to VCU. I fear for my safety and the safety of my family.

I believe what I heard because I have talked to other people that I trust and he simply does not want to come because he is afraid.
My response? He is scared?! That is ludicrous! Ed should tell Marble Mouth about the crowd response to the Joey's retirement video. Shaka's video...LOUD CHEERS. Wade's video...LOUD BOOS. Rockhead's video...APATHY. Nobody cares about him. He decided to create a narrative of people hating him but most of us found out he is a dillweed when he decided to block VCU fans on social media and create a narrative that VCU backstabbed him. Dude! Really? You took a $3 million+ job in the Big Ten and VCU screwed you? You had the advantage of the Texas series and got a home game against LSU. Get outta here with that crapola. Now, after not even making your own conference tournament you are making your AD pay half a million because you are scared? Good luck with that Barney Rubble.
To be fair, one can never state what another man fears and if he fears for his family then he is within his right to have his employer pay. This is why we put the clause in his K in the first place.

Personally, I could see some of our fans doing something stupid. We do have that in our cohort. It may be just verbal but it’s there and he is within his rights as a human being not to put his family or his team through that.

Now, I do think people dislike Mike in a different way than SS. Also, with SS and WW we had a HC who were their friends or at least friendly. They would know who to talk with and how to deal with any negativity. Mike doesnt have that. Further, Mike and Ed did have a falling out. It is clear SS didnt care for Ed, and WW didnt give a darn but neither of those guys went to President Rao to complain about him formally. So yes, like it or not there is reason for concern.

Think of this, as much as some were pissed a SS they had to acknowledge he left the place better than it was before he came, and he stayed longer than he had to. WW while many of us think of himself as the scum of the earth, we really weren’t sad that he left. Angry yes, sad, not really. Mike is different people dont like how he left, why he left, and then their are those who never respected him and don think he is worth the money PSU is paying. That’s a lot to unpack.

Finally, I’d rather have the 1 million for our NIL fund as beating PSU in the near future wont be worth much. My only issue is that Ed and crew have got to up the ante in these contracts make it at least 2 mil per game and have the other colleges pay out the balance of our HC’s contract.

It is clear SS didnt care for Ed.
That is not clear at all. I think they actually get along pretty well.

As far as Rhoades goes he is clearly just being a b!tch. If he doesn't want his family here he doesn't have to bring them. When he got to play against coach Wade and LSU Wade had plenty of security around him the entire time. No one could have done anything to him if they wanted to. Not that anyone wants to. The team is in no danger either. 99% of VCU fans probably couldn't name a single Penn State player or pick them out of a lineup. I know I can't. It is all just a bunch of excuses. He is soft

This is just my view from the cheap seats. I dont think Ed gets along "great" with anyone except for a very few a$$kissers and the people he brings in. The folks he brings in are "ride or die" people (which is good). He runs a clean program and doesn't take short cuts. Very solid work ethic. But his ability to build rapport with me and some of the donors I know falls completely flat. And I love the school and the program. He doesn't do things that offend me. He is just benign in his approach to me and sort of everything done seems (and I hate this word) transactional.

I just deleted a post saying the same thing before I read your post.

Wade was the coach most likely to get a hostile reaction from the fans and everything seemed to work out fine. MR has to be the most thin-skinned coach we've ever had at VCU. As much as I want to get as many P4/5 schools on our schedule, I'm not losing any sleep over PSU.

Maybe not to you. However, he did state that he likely would have stayed if Norwood would have hung around.

Also, as to Mike there is more to the story and he wasn’t just being a nancy. His family his choice. He is team his choice. His decision to make alone.

Neither you or anyone else has the right to tell him what amount of risk or the type of security precautions he should be comfortable. As to his team, that has been discussed continuing to bring it up ads nothing new to the analysis.

Again, wish him well, and let’s move on.

Norwood had very good rapport to fans and colleagues imo. He always called himself a friend-raiser as opposed to a fundraiser. Ed and SS had very different ways of interacting with people. Although I am not aware of any particulars, I can easily see SS not bonding particularly well with Ed

There is a pet company called Chewy. They sell pet food, toys, supplies that you can buy online. They sometimes have good deals and if you have a dog (like me) you will eventually redeem a coupon for really cheap food/ treats and have it delivered free to your home.
Eventually, many folks keep ordering (convenience) and find if they get a subscription for monthly delivery, they can save an additional 10%. Its reasonable and reliable. But occasionally you would walk down an aisle at Kroger and see a Super Sale at half off and say "Darn, I wish I didnt have the auto delivery this month".
The sucky thing about dogs (as I recently found out) is they don't live as long as people. And when that day comes its the worst day in your life. A few weeks later your auto shipment of pet food arrives. Its a sad reminder and you call Chewy and tell them that your pet died and to please stop the subscription.
Chewy immediately stops the subscription, refunds your last shipment in full and tells you do donate the food to a local shelter in your pets honor. When you get off the phone, they take a minute to look at social media and find a picture of your pet and send you a small print or drawing of your dog and a note of sympathy. All total that takes about 20 minutes and maybe $40 to $50.00. But trust and believe, after you experience that you will never go anywhere else for your pets needs than Chewy for the rest of your life. Even if they mess up an order or raise their prices -you will be a Chewy customer for life.
Anyway, that is how you run a company and treat customers. Ed falls short there. We don't make a refund for a cancelled game. We don't do the honoring for a fallen Ram fan. We don't make it right if an app doesn't deliver a free prize if won. We use to needlessly move people that have been fans for years further away from the action.... That is how you make customers for life and where Ed could use some improvement.

Well said.
