Coaching Rumors and Changes that Affect VCU

Adam Nelson at Hoopdirt says former VCU assistant J. D. Byers has interviewed for the Radford head coaching job. He's also saying Will Wade is the hot name for NC State, which everyone already knows.

JD Byers would be a pretty good fit for Radford.

Does Tobi go with him to Radford? Obviously no one wants to transfer down from a P5... and Tobi was one of the few bright spots for Tech this year, and he showed he could hang for the most part in the ACC.

But Byers is also a big reason he went there... so I'm curious to see what happens there if JD goes to Radford.

I think he would, especially if he felt he was more likely to win some games at Radford as opposed to a horribly weak Virginia Tech team that just lost to Cal.

Tobi just averaged 12 & 7 in the ACC while shooting 37% from three. He isn't leaving tech to go to Radford.
I'm sure Tech can pay him a sh!t ton more than Radford. I would say his chances are better returning to VCU than going to Radford.

If anything Tobi may transfer up. Might even follow Coach Odom to wherever he goes.

let's contrast the NETs of the teams in the Maui MTE
Auburn (2), Iowa St (9), Michigan St (10), Uconn (32), UNC (40), , Memphis (48), Dayton (67) and Colorado (90)

6 of 8 teams would have been quad 1 games (dayton got to play 3 quad 1 games there )

sort of the luck of the rotation of the MTEs (Maui and Atlantis are normally 1-2 in strength of teams for the obvious reaaons they are great trips and then the Charleston & Orlando MTEs are next

with the $1 million NIL guarantees being offered in Vegas that will upset the applecart going forward on where the best P4 want to play if at all

go rams
Sure, you can cherry pick quite literally the best MTE this season as far as the participants' NET rankings are concerned to fit your argument and you aren't wrong at all. Was the Maui MTE better than the Charleston Classic? Yes. But was the Charleston Classic objectively bad? Not at all, and this is the point I'm trying to make.

A lot of posters on here are complaining about "how weak the Charleston Classic was this year", and the point I was trying to make was, that is just objectively not true. The MTE was solid, not great, not bad, but it was good enough to give VCU a couple of Q1/2 opportunities. But as per usual, we lost our first game against an uncharacteristically bad Seton Hall team, and we spiraled from there. We had a chance against Nevada (79) which we led by ~13 at one point and pissed it away, and then naturally, because we were 0-2 in the tournament, we were playing the other worst team, Miami, who mind you, we still squeaked by winning only by 7. My point was, there were plenty of quality opponents in that tournament but based on our own performance, we weren't able to play any of them. Vanderbilt (43) would've been the 2nd best NET ranking team on our schedule below New Mexico (41) and Drake (56), Nevada (79), Oklahoma State (91), and FAU (107) would have been better than everyone else on our non-conference schedule not named Colorado State (54).

Sure, it was no Maui, but it was darn good enough to give us PLENTY of quality win opportunities. We just characteristically pooped the bed like we do every year in whichever MTE we participate in.

Does anyone have any idea what the entry cost is to the Maui event? And total cost of the trip? I've always looked at these "once in a lifetime" lavish excursions as payment, of sorts, to the players .... but now that the players get paid in a more traditional manner, is it necessary?

Word on the street is Wade is no longer an option for NC State. The scoop is he wants a bigger job (I assume Texas).

Where did you hear this? That's not an aggressive question, btw. I'm just interested.
