Coaching Rumors and Changes that Affect VCU

Minnesota's AD flew into fire Ben Johnson in the middle of the night. Only 1 winning season, and also only $2 million for basketball towards NIL.
Doesn't sound like much for a B1G school.
The fact is that fans often perceive a much greater difference between "P5" programs and our own than actually exists. We are not Colgate. Unless one attaches determinative weight to the P5 label itself, I think VCU is a "better job" than 20% or more of P5 jobs. (Looking at you Rhoades)

What sucks about losing a coach every two years

- Lose your players including really good ones that have started to develop

- First year expectations are crap because you have to rebuild the entire roster.

- Fans become more disconnected as soon as they buy in.
Most likely the only chance we have of keeping our core players including our recruits is if Odom stays, or one of his assistants is hired.

I don't have a crystal ball, but neither are likely to happen.

Agreed. My daughter works at MSU and she says the athletic department has no money to hire interns or give raises. All of it's going to pay the athletes.

There are several A10 schools with NIL budgets bigger than that.

Are there any dissenting voices at UVA or NC State re: Odom? Obviously most of us think he's good and want him to stay, but I can see a scenario where p5 fans aren't convinced he has proven enough. He has spent the last 4 years at schools that have been good regardless of coach (Utah State didn't miss a beat after he left, and VCU is VCU). We're all obviously hoping for the best this season but there is a not insignificant chance we don't make the tournament, in which case RO would have one trip to the tournament since 2018, which was a first round loss.

I'm not saying I'm not convinced he is a good coach, because think he is, and obviously other schools' athletic departments agree. And I don't think some pushback from a small minority of fans makes any difference, but I can see that discussion being had.

I was talking before the UR game to someone in the VCU athletic administration. He was saying one of their main focuses is the tough task of getting students back into the Stu. I said that really the best way to do that is to win -- get to the NCAA Tourney and win a game or two. That would bring them back because they'll want to be part of something. The admin guy said, yeah that would work but the problem is we'd immediately lose our coach and have to start over. VCU has proven it can be a really, really good program with multiple coaches, but it's really, really hard to move to that next level when you lose your leader so often.

So, why can't we spend all that money we don't spend on football and buy us a coach that will stay?

The more spent on a coach, the less that can be spent on players. The school has said it will spend $5M on sports NIL, but hasn't really said where that money is coming from. I know for a fact that there have been cuts in the athletic department related to boosting the money available for NIL.

It will not be sustainable if we start losing coaches after two years

He’s a really bad coach. He would’ve been fired last year until their miracle run. They were really bad until that run. That run was due to the players getting it together and nothing to do with Keatts. He’s been bad throughout his time at NC State and this past year was just awful.
interesting take

I guess I am less harsh on Keatts ability (and no I don't want him at VCU if Odom leaves)

he toiled for awhile as an assistant and then got the UNCW job and in his 3 years won the conference each year and won the CAA tourney 2 of 3 years

getting to the Final 4 like he did last year is often a lifetime achievement for many coaches - I would not diminish that as much as some posters do and clearly we see his contributions to that run differently (that is what differing opinions are about - same facts differing conclusions)

BUT, all that said, sometimes coaches are better at a mid and lower level than with a P4/P5 team - the level of talent at the P4/P5 throughout the roster is definitely different than the talent in the CAA (not to say that there are not 1 or 2 players on a CAA roster that could not play and contribute to most P4/P5s

VCU has had a number of coaches that knocked it out of the park at our level but had middling success at P5/P4 levels and lost jobs or left before they were fired - for some coaches it is a growing cycle to learn how to be successful consistently at a P4/P5

not sure Keatts is going to get a chance again at a P4/P5 either
