Complete 2009-2010 All-CAA teams

i feel like they got everything right. i am not saying Larry Sanders does not deserve Defensive Player of The Year, but i feel like he got it because of his name more so than his actual defensive play

it's called Intimidation!

Head to head, here's how Sanders and Jenkins matched up in 09-10:

Jenkins, 7-for-18 FG, 7 turnovers, 21 points

Sanders, 11-for-13, 31 points, 5 boards, 3 blocks ... VCU wins, EASILY, at Hofstra; Jenkins might be - repeat might be - as good as Jay Gavin.

Last year, in two VCU wins, Jenkins was a combined 10-for-39 - can you do much worse than that?

A few years back, VCU posters screamed "foul" when ODU's Loughton got POY over VCU's Nick George. And in that case, Loughton deserved it in the eyes of any logical onlookers.

And now Jenkins - representing a team that has done nothing in the conference and has never played in a CAA marquee event - is the POY. And VCU fans seem as fine as fine can be.

So to quote that great philosopher, Timon, from Lion King:

"You know her, she knows you;
"And she wants to eat him ...
"And everyone is OK with this?"

Palms up, in disbelief (like you see Brandon Rozzell each time he's called for foul)

Well with that line of reasoning, Denzel Bowles should be player of the year.

He took Larry to school both times head-to-head.

District Baller - you're making my point for me ...

Why are VCU's most involved fans - the people who should care the most - not going to bat for arguably the premier talent in the history of the program, in the midst of a 20-8 season and the most dominating home-court campaign ever - d. Oklahoma, UR, ECU, RI, and on and on?

No way this CAA award is a clear-cut vote for Mr. Eighth Place - a guy who never played in a spotlight game.

There's not a coach in the CAA that would trade Sanders for 10 Jenkins and 10 Jenkins in each of the next 10 recruiting classes.

From my vantage, it's an ever-so obvious ploy of trying to convince No. 1 - and possibly (insane as it may be) the folks who are evaluating No .1 - that another year in black and gold would be more valuable to his future than a year of playing/practicing with an NBA team, for unthinkable riches.

And you think that Mr. 77-inch Wingspan - with this self-serving attitude from his supposed fan base - might want to chuck $2.5 million to play another season for You Guys?

I think that we should just be happy that Larry got 1st team. I would have had Jenkins, Allen, Lee and probably Bowles in front of him.

I honestly can't believe that he got DPOY.

 That's a theory.

I don't think that anyone really thought Larry had a legitimate shot at Player of the Year honors after the way he ended the last couple of games. As much as he helped us, he also loafed around a lot and seemed disinterested in the game at other times. He was up and down all season. While his stats were quite robust, those who watched him knew he was not playing to his considerable potential. A player with his skill-level led VCU to a 5th place finish in a mid-major conference. Jenkins for all his skills, is no NBA talent. Sanders is the only guy in this league with the attention of NBA scouts.

I doubt not getting POY is going to stop Larry from leaving this year if he wanted to. I wouldn't blame him, and I know many fans who would be happy to see him go given his attitude and lackluster efforts at times. At other times he is simply the most dominant player in the conference. I'd love to see him come back, but I also highly doubt that he will. I will wish him the best, as most all here will.

Sorry there is no such thing as a fanbase without a self-serving attitude. We're in it with the 'what can you do for us?' attitude. We want what's best for our team. Whether that's Larry staying or leaving remains to be seen. In some games, we have certainly played better when Larry is sitting on the bench.

There's no question that when Larry's playing to his strengths and putting forth a good effort. VCU is unbeatable.

Bighorn, the problem is. We all believe Larry should stay another year by the way hes played. No doubt about it. But if you looked at the games that he didnt throw up almost 20 points and double digit rebounds, you could see a lot of times he either didnt care, wasnt focused or was afraid to get fouls on him. I mean when you sit there and let guys go right by you w/out even slowing their momentum, theres a problem with that. If he does that in the NBA, he's either going to get put on the bench at the back of the line, sent down to the D-League like Hasheem Thabeet, traded to another team or he's gonna get cut and is gonna be looking for a job somewhere else.

I mean he needs to step up his game and play more consistently and better on defense. I am glad to see hes not taking 3's much if at all anymore.

Its also pretty bad when you've got people like Joe Lunardi who was calling the ODU game on TV, that "VCU was playing better with Larry on the bench." You also noticed when he either didnt play.... or in the case of when we played ODU at home, he didnt start... he seemed to be more focused. I mean we all said it when he got that flagrant foul that was called on him after the Drexel game and he had to sit out vs delaware, when he came back versus Hofstra he was more focused and played better.

He needs to understand he plays for the name on the front of the jersey, not the back. I hope he does come back next year, and hopefully he will come back with a better mindset, attitude and willingness to actually play defense. I have no doubt in my mind had Larry been more consistent on Defense, we'd at least be in 3rd place if not higher. Plus if he comes back with a better mindset, and willingness to play defense I think we could be looking at another reg. season title with the recruits we have coming in, and all we are losing is KP and TJ which are big losses for us but hopefully with the recruits we got coming in, as well as the majority of the team still being here, we should be able to take the #1 spot back to its rightful owners.

It might sound like we are "Larry Haters" which we're not, or at least most of us arent, we were just getting tired of Larry's attitude playing defense.

Ha and after all that Larry is still the 2-time defending Defensive Player of the Year. It's funny how what fans see and what other people see differ sometimes.

yeah well I sat in the front row by the pep band for every VCU home game w/ the Rowdies and we could all see it. I mean I'm not trying to hate on Larry or anything, Im just speaking what I saw, and being that I had a front row seat to all of the home games is kinda hard not to notice it.

No I agree with you man. I'm just saying that most of our fanbase has this same view, but the coaches and media still think he's the best defensive player in the conference. It's just ironic that's all.

yeah... I mean on his best day he prob is the best defensive guy in this conference, but as a whole this year I would not have put him #1, no offense to him.

I wonder if we are asking Larry to do too much, particularly on offense. From my seat it looked like he was made the first option, most half court plays designed for him to work for post position. And from those plays we made bad post passes resulting in turnovers, didn't get much inside-out offense, settled too often for fade away jump shots and removed him as an offensive rebounder, a facet of his game that shines like few others. He could be one of the best offensive rebounders ever at VCU. I would like to break down some film and figure out what the "enhanced" team shooting percentage is when Larry is in the game and shots from inside 15 feet are taken by anybody else. { reminds me of a quote by JPR "we're going to shove it down your throat"}

Anyway, i have heard people complaining he is not the first guy down the court after throwing the ball in, not working hard enough for post position, getting enough rebounds, blocking enough shots and keeping the popcorn from getting burnt during halftime. I agree, there are games where he seems to be able to do all of these things but that's a lot to ask and sometimes "overload" may be occurring, diluting his focus and energies into facets of his game that are not yet fully developed to the detriment of his bread and butter, defense and rebounding. Even with the additional offensive burden he was still recognized as the DPOY, quite an accomplishment.

Two points:

Larry has been much more productive than most of the posters on here give him credit for.

Ben Finney? WTF?

I agree with that. Larry has been at or near the top of many of the key statistics for a big man such as scoring, rebounding, fg %, blocks etc. He has done a heck of a job. Maybe our expectations are too high. You have to admit that some games he just makes you want to tear your hair out. He's so unbelievably talented it's scary. When he's playing his game, he's unstoppable...when he's apathetic and loafing, you dread seeing him on the floor. I still love Larry's game, I just think he could be THAT much better than he already is. Perhaps we're asking him to do to much...but he's our star and with that comes scrutiny. It sounds like he's motivated to play 4 great games this weekend, so I hope he does and wins us our 3rd CAA title in the last 4 years.

As for Ben Finney, I think he's a good fit at the 3rd team. ODU is the #1 team in the conference, they are gonna have someone other than Lee on the 3 All-CAA teams. Finney is probably the best candidate from ODU other than Lee. He's a solid, scrappy, rebounding guard who has reminds me somewhat of Jesse Pellot-Rosa minus the perimeter prowess.
