I just came across this today. If Rhode Island leaves in 2012 that would put the CAA at an unbalanced 11 teams. This would put VCU as being the potential 12th team after ODU and Georgia State join.
The CAA could be split up accordingly...

North
Delaware (Stadium capacity 22,000)
Maine (Stadium capacity 10,000)
UMASS (Stadium capacity 17,000)
New Hampshire (Stadium capacity 8,000)
Towson (Stadium capacity 11,198)
Villanova (Stadium capacity 12,500)

South
James Madison (Stadium capacity 24,978)
Richmond (Stadium capacity 8,700)
William and Mary (Stadium capacity 12,259)
Old Dominion (2011) (Stadium capacity 19,782)
Georgia State (2012) (Stadium capacity 70,000)
VCU (?)

We would have very low travel costs and it would make a super division within the state of Virginia. I'm currently developing my own feasibility study for football and hopefully this departure can boost some more conversation about VCU football.

If we look at how ODU started football we can get an idea of what it takes to start a team.
If we announce we will start football in 2011, we would need to raise 8 million dollars in little under half a year and announce the future construction of a football stadium. For three years we would raise money and conduct a feasibility study for the location of the VCU Ram stadium. After the 3 years we would be able to field our first team, which would be 2014. For two years we would be an independent and playing in City Stadium. Being that football has just started, many fans will be able to overlook the fact that City Stadium is not an ideal stadium. At the same time we build a football stadium on the Boulevard where the diamond currently sits. The stadium would be around 20,000 to 25,000 seats and have over 24 press boxes much like ODU has in their stadium. Then in 2016 we join the CAA and move into our brand new stadium.

VCU instantly becomes a household name in Virginia. The stadium could also be used for concerts and be a central hub to building up the boulevard.

How bout it?

raise 8 mil in 6 months...sure why not...put me down for a mil or two

While we are dreaming, put me down for a couple nickels.

When is your feasibility study going to be ready? I'm really interested in knowing which measures you're using. I really do want someone to convince me that football is a good idea at VCU (financially).
