Virginia Commonwealth men’s basketball assistant coach Bill Courtney is leaving after less than two months on the job to become an assistant at Virginia Tech, VCU head coach Shaka Smart said through an athletic department spokesman. An official announcement could come as soon as tomorrow or Friday.

Courtney, a career assistant, will replace Stacey Palmore, who left last month after five seasons for an assistant job at Georgia, citing family reasons.

Courtney spent the previous three seasons as an assistant at Virginia. Cavaliers coach Dave Leitao resigned under pressure after the season, and Smart hired Courtney on April 15.

Prior to working at Virginia, Courtney spent one season at Providence, eight seasons at George Mason and one season at Bowling Green, where he worked under Jim Larranaga before following him to George Mason. Courtney began his coaching career in 1995-96, the season before he went to Bowling Green, when he worked at American.

Courtney, who is from Springfield, Va., played at Bucknell and was inducted into the school’s sports hall of fame in 2007.

Tech head coach Seth Greenberg said he could not comment on the situation. Courtney did not return a telephone message seeking comment.

Welcome to my poop list Mr. Courtney!

This really isn't a big deal. Smart will get another completely qualified asst. coach. Hopefully he'll get an asst. with ubber experience in coaching big men.

I never did like that whinning scumbag Greenberg. I hope he loses every game.

Wow! It is truly hard to believe that someone would take a job and have no commitment to see it through. Thanks Shaka for getting me out of the unemployment line but I have another opportunity! I think I did something like that when I was in high school working @ Hechingers! Not sure you want someone like that anyway.

He should call AG and see if he has a better opening then VT. Then maybe try Kentucky. I think he could have a great job before midnight madness.

Makes me puke!

I understand regarding the money and coaching in the ACC, don't understand in terms of integrity. Geez, can you give us at least one full season before looking elsewhere?

I think its kinda lame if you ask me, but should we really expect more from anyone these days?

Greg Burton reporting that his replacement may be announced today.

That's disappointing news! We just can't seem to catch a break regarding coaches these days! Hopefully, we'll be pleased with his replacement.

Nothing surprises me anymore...don't want to be here then don't let the door hit you on the way out

You know what the good thing about VCU is we have coaches lined up to get a job here .....we will be alright and will probably get a better coach

This pretty much puts college coaching and ethics in perspective. You just don't jump ship after 2 months on the job after committing to a brand new coach. And as far a Greenberg is concerned - so much for having respect for another state institution. It's not like Courtney left to go to Alabama, Kentucky or California. He left for another Virginia school. Greenberg is as classless as Courtney regarding this series of events.

Courtney is a solid recruiter and his departure is going to hurt VCU big time. I wonder how the new recruits feels about this. He didn't even make it to their first practice at VCU. I think this hurts more than Eblen jumping ship!
