I was hoping to hear about a recruit or two over the summer, but it looks like they are all waiting until the fall. Hopefully they will follow through with all of their visits before making a decision so Coach Smart and the rest of the staff can make a case for VCU. I feel good about our chances to get one or two of these 3 and 4 star guys, but after watching the 2007 Duke game over the weekend I wouldn't be worried if we end up with a couple of hard working late bloomers who may not be as highly rated at this point.

I say take him to the interstate billboard of Larry and say "Damontre your picture will be up here in a year or two".

getsmart, awesome point! I also hope theres a great music event in RVA that day/weekend he'd be interested in attending....

Looks like he will be coming during open house weekend

do you know if there is anything special planned that weekend? here's hoping that the campus will be packed, full of energy, and that the weather is nice so that Damontre and his family leave with a good impression.

it wouldn't hurt for someone to put signs up saying "Welcome Home Damontre Harris" or "VCU Welcomes it's newest Star Damontre Harris", etc, etc you get the point. I would be willing to bet that no other college campus is as stoked about having him visit as we will be.

id love to see the billboard stay up for a few more months anyways

I have a feeling that all the other schools on that list will be inviting him to a major football game during his visit...no offense, but open house weekend really can't compete with that.

Florida doesnt have a game on the 16th but if he stays the weekend he will get to see them play Arkansas
Maryland Vs Rutgers
USC Vs FAU
Wake Vs Baylor

Open house isn't close to any of those things sadly

Shoot...the Wizards vs Memphis preseason game at the Stu is four days prior to his visit. Can the AD reschedule his visit?

I really think some of you guys are overestimating the impact of football on a basketball recruit. Don't get me wrong, it certainly helps but its just a piece of the puzzle. I really doubt football will be the deciding factor. Based on what some are saying we shouldn't bother recruiting against football schools.

Think about it, does the fact that Miami gets 70,000 for a football game offset the 3,000+ they draw for basketball?

I think conference affiliate is a much bigger obstacle than a school having a football team.

theres a concert at the siegel ctr on the 17 or 18th. hopefully lil wayne..he does love vcu and larry...

Great feedback, as we all cross our fingers...

I hope we lead with who are and what we have, which is very unique. Men's BB is top bill at VCU, which now has first class facilities, an extremely broad academic offering, and all in a first class urban setting.

My daughter graduated with honors from VCU two years ago, after skipping her senior of HS and being accepted at her other two considerations: UVA and Tech. I talked with her recently and she absolutely had no regrets. She went to VCU for her reasons, not football programs or cocktail party name dropping. I hope we do not reduce our class sizes to chase perceptions. Reality demands meeting needs, which we proudly do in a first class manner.

My point: those "football schools in college towns" arent' bad, but they are not VCU. With our coachs working/recruiting hard, as upcoming visits attest, we will find those who are good students and great athletes, and who will be excited to call VCU home!

This is the "keep hope alive" post to offset the football gloom:

Way more important than entertaining a recruit at a football game is the current rosters and recruiting of our competitors. Taking a quick look this is how things appear to me:

Maryland
Apparently they are out of scholarships for 2010 and would need to have somebody transfer to make a spot for Harris: http://brendan-andrew.blogs.cbssports.c ... w/16216956

Now, nothing is ever guaranteed until pen is put to paper, but as it appears now the Terps are in the running for all 5. However, in order to sign one or more of these guys they will have to have a transfer from the current roster. Considering a lot of the talent around the end of the bench, it may not be the worst thing in the world.

Florida
Their roster is loaded with big men (all 4 & 5 star guys out of H.S.), they got a 2010 commitment from 5 star big man Patric Young. Harris could very easily get lost in the shuffle at least for a couple of years here.

Wake Forest
Currently have two sophomore big men, Tony Woods (4 star) & Ty Walker (5 star) in addition to sophomore Al-Farouq Aminu (5 star). They also have an incoming freshman Ari Stewart (4 star) but I guess he's projected to be a SF. They got a 2010 commitment from big man Melvin Tabb (4 star). They may also be out of scholarships for 2010. Looks like they have 4 seniors and 4 verbals for 2010. However, the NBA may factor into available scholarships for next year. Maybe Jamie Skeen can get in his ear about Wake when Harris is on campus to visit.

South Carolina
This is the situation that I'm most concerned about. Looks like they have 6 available scholarships, got one commitment so far from 4 star big man RJ Slawson. They lose 2 bigs this year, their other 4 bigs are juniors. Plus I think SC has been recruiting him the longest and were one of the first to contact him. Also geographically, Columbia SC is about an hour closer to Fayetteville, NC than Richmond is. This is a situation where football may HURT South Carolina because trying to find b-ball info was like looking for a needle in a haystack, everything is football there.

This is where I imagine the H.S. coach steps in and helps Harris sort through these scenarios and the impact of being at a football game gets minimized. I think its still a long shot to sign Harris, but I don't think its unreasonable and if we made it this far it can happen.
