RAMS PICK UP TWO WINS ON DAY ONE OF VCU 4-1 INVITATIONAL

RICHMOND, Va. – Coming off yet another 20 win season and a trip to the NCAA Tournament, the Virginia Commonwealth wanted to start the 2011 campaign off on the right track when it opened the annual 4-1 Invitational, hosted by the Rams at the Thalhimer Tennis Center.

The Black & Gold did just that, gutting out a 3-2 victory over a feisty Georgetown team and following it up with a 5-0 rout of Howard University.

RAMS SWEEP GEORGETOWN, HOWARD ON FIRST DAY OF VCU 4-1 INVITATIONAL
RICHMOND, Va. – After losing one of the country's best players in Thibaut Charron to graduation, Head Coach Paul Kostin knew he would have to lean on senior Tim Johannsen to lead the VCU men's tennis squads.

Three matches into the 2011 campaign, Johannsen is proving that Kostin can do that as the veteran carried the Black & Gold to back-to-back sweeps on the first day of the VCU 4-1 Invitational, 5-0 over Georgetown and Howard.

"It was a good way to start the weekend," Kostin said. "Any time you can win and do it efficiently, it's a good thing. However, with such a young team, we have to make sure our confidence doesn't get to high and we focus on getting better every time we hit the courts."
