Horrible record against the better teams..
Inability to consistently get dominant play from good frontcourt players....
Multiple late game collapses with double digit leads....
Most talented roster yet not even in the top 3....

He can recruit, but the evidence says he can't coach....yet that well. Hopefully his either his staff can bail him out next year, or he will learn to how to hold onto leads. Poor guy; he seems like he knows what he is doing but man do his teams utterly collapse at critical times on a consistent basis.

I am just asking Rambler. The way he lost games is indeed troubling. It is not indicative of a seasonsed and savvy coach. It indicates that a team lacks confidence in themselves and their leadership. A failure to make adjustments has ended many coaching careers!

I would not say that he underachieved.

He is not on the same level as Coach K, Coach Pitino, or Coach Cal. However I would not say that he underachieved. He did produce 22 wins as a first year coach with players left over from another coaching staff.

Sure there were a few games this year that VCU blew leads in, however I don't think all of the blame can be put on the coaching staff. Some of the blame has to go to the players because they are ultimately the ones on the court.

Overall, I think that the future for Coach Smart and the RAMS looks positive considering the players that we have coming back next year and the recruits that we have coming in next year.

Losing Maynor was going to hurt.... there's been a lot of denial and ignoring of this fact. We have a lot of talent on this team, but so do some of these other teams.

I don't think he underachieved. Do you guys remember what our team looked like last year when Eric was on the bench, we couldn't do anything. I disappointed in the loss, but we played tough. I hated the last play of regulation, really a pass to Larry. I think Shaka had a solid year, hopefully he learned from his mistakes and we do better next year.

I think the better thread title would be "did larry sanders underachieve"....and the answer of course is yes

Even the odu fans I was sitting next to commented they were more comfertable when he was in the game than on the bench....I not going to bother looking at the stats but g.lee outplayed him

smart gets kudos from myself, he has alot to learn, but I am excited about a future with him

First and foremost the SEASON IS NOT OVER! We will play in the NIT, which, although not the NCAA, is a very reputuable tournament. I mean how many teams will make it to the NCAA's to only lose in the first round. With an NIT game, which we may get to host, we can increase the single season attendance record, gain additional national exposure, since all NIT games are televised, get some more $$ for the CAA and the school and have a legit chance at winning some more games.

Have we ever won an NIT game, honestly don't know? But how would you feel if we made a run to the NIT final four. Or even won the NIT?!

Coach Smart has done a good job. No need to second guess anything.

Your apparent lack of intellect is more troubling than anything that Coach Smart could, would, or should have done.

22-8 in a rebuilding year is more than okay by my standards...next year should be a fun one. With that being said, let's not forget that we failed to beat OU, NU, URI, UR, ODU and GMU...oh wait

Based on stats Larry has played better this year than his first 2 seasons. Maybe your expections were a little high. Also he leads the team in points, rebounds and blocks......and he's just a junior.

Great job for a first year coach; 22-9 is nothing to sneeze at. We had some great quality wins this year, including over Oklahoma. I think he will only get better.

Larry should come back next year. He needs to develop more consistency; as good as he looks one game, he looks just as bad the next. (Maybe we need another Larry thread... :D ) I for one would like to see him come back and team up with Joey for a great senior year for them both.

shaka will grow as a coach. I think when he has his own players running his plays, it will be a different outcome.

I really think larry checked out a few months ago. he gone.

walking out I was talking to some other fans and they agreed the worst thing the students could have done is chant larry-sanders...because then he thinks he runs the team.

it was an interesting take he had.
