Today is Eugene Trani's last day as president of VCU. Love him, hate him, no one can deny his lasting impact on this institution.
Among his many accomplishments, one I particularly admire was his handling of the Medical Center's loss of certification to perform research. He took full resposibility, stepped in with a firm hand, established the Independent Review board and established procedures that within a year's time had the research program recertified, invigorated and up to speed.
